Baseball cruises to 14-6 win over Hilbert

Tigers score 14 straight runs, improve to 4-8

WEBSTER, NY -
The RIT baseball team (4-8) scored 14 consecutive runs en route to a 14-6 victory over Hilbert (1-6) at Field of Dreams Park on Tuesday afternoon.  RIT had just seven hits, but drew a season-high 11 walks in the victory.  RIT scored 11 runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings.

RIT did not record its first until the bottom of the seventh inning, a single by Ben Lynch (Duanesburg, NY/Duanesburg)Kreag Bradley (Victor, NY/Victor) promptly doubled right after, driving in two runs to make the score 10-1 RIT.

The Hawks made five errors, walked 11 batters, and threw 10 wild pitches. 

Bradley continued his torrid start, was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI.  Justin Smith (Livonia, NY/Livonia) was 1-for-2 with three walks, and three RBI.  Dave Kernan (North Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) was 1-for-2 with three walks.  He also made his collegiate pitching debut in the ninth inning, allowing five unearned runs.

Dan Schuster (Livonia, NY/Livonia), Joel Walker (Morrisville, VT/Peoples Academy), Michael Burns (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta), and Ronnie Canestro (East Amherst, NY/Nichols) combined to allow just four hits and one run, with eight strikeouts over the first eight innings.  Burns picked up his first collegiate victory, allowing one hit in two innings of relief.  Canestro struck out four batters.

Jim Pernick hit a bases clearing double in the ninth inning for Hilbert.  Edward Sarcione took the loss on the mound, allowing six runs, three earned in 5 2/3 innings.  Ironically, Sarcione did not allow a hit, but did walk six batters, and threw six wild pitches.

The Tigers will face Cazenovia in a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Webster.
