Men's soccer falls to Vassar in Liberty League Championship

ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT men's soccer team came up a goal short, falling to Vassar 3-2 in the Liberty League Men's Soccer Championship in front of 400 people at RIT Field on Saturday. The Tigers finish the season with an 11-7-2 record, while the Brewers (11-5-3) earn the automatic bid into the NCAA Div. III Tournament.

Shots were even at 13-13, while Vassar took eight corner kicks to just three for the Tigers.

Vassar controlled play in the first few minutes of the opening half, generating three good chances, including a goal in the 5th minute from Juliano Pereira. Off a corner kick from Ross Macklin, the ball fell to Pereira on a scramble and he fired a volley the found the top right corner to give the Brewers a 1-0 lead,

RIT had a good chance to tie the score on a shot from 18 yards out by David Vogt (Rochester, NY/McQuaid). The was headed for the right corner but Dante Varotsis saved the ball off the line for the Brewers.

Sean Sullivan (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) had another great chance when Sean Sullivan (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) fired a shot from 10 yard out. Grimme came off his line and made the save for Vassar.

The Tigers finally broke through, tying the score in the 28th minute on Matt Broedel (Hamilton, NY/Hamilton)'s third goal of the season. Off a long throw from Todd Gaulocher (Old Greenwich, CT/Greenwich), Jimmy Forbes (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) tipped a loose ball over to Broedel who volleyed a shot from seven yards out box into the left corner, tying the score at 1-1.

The Brewers took the lead back in the 32nd minute on Evan Seltzer's first goal of the season. He volleyed a shot over RIT goalkeeper Ben Frazier (Westminster, MD/Westminster)'s head into the right corner off an assist from Dante Varotsis.

In the 39th minute, RIT forward Jon Rosebrook (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) was tripped by a Vassar defender inside the box, giving the Tigers a penalty kick. Senior Dan Holowaty (Strongsville, OH/St. Ignatius) calmly stepped up and fired a shot into the left corner, tying the score at 2-2.

Vassar once again controlled play early in the second half, but Frazier kept the game tied for RIT, with a pair of spectacular sprawling saves from point blank shots by Casey Rice and Varotsis.

With 16 minutes to play, RIT midfielder Todd Gaulocher (Old Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) beat Vassar goalie Ryan Grimme to a losse ball and flicked a shot on net. Just before the bal crossed the line, Vassar defender Simon Whitelaw sprinted back, saving the ball off the line just before it went in.

In the 85th minute off a free kick from 35 yards out, Macklin sent a bending ball into the RIT box that Xander Mrlik elevated and headed into the near corner to give the Brewers the lead. That would prove to be the game winner as Vassar's defense held RIT at bay depsite several good chances down the stretch,

Grimmer picks up the win for Vassar allowing two goals and making three saves. Frazier took the loss allowing three goals and making foour saves.
