ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT baseball team (18-20) lost their final game of the 2010 on Wednesday to No. 12 SUNY Cortland (32-8-1), 8-3 on a cold, cloudy day at RIT Field. The Red Dragons scored six runs in the final two innings to rally for the victory.
RIT struck first when
Ed Hughes (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) knocked in
Ryan Campbell (Brockport, NY/Brockport) with a single in the bottom of the first inning. RIT added another run in the third, when senior
Geoff Dornes (Landsville, PA/Hempfield) singled in
Justin Smith (Livonia, NY/Livonia), who reached on an error.
Cortland cut the lead in half in the top of the fifth inning, but RIT answered back in the bottom half of the inning when senior
Chris Brol (Ijamsville, MD/Urbana) singled in Campbell.
It looked like it was going to be a fairytale ending for the seniors until the Red Dragons took advantage of four RIT errors and struck for three runs in each of the eighth and ninth innings and never looked back.
Dornes was great in his final start for the Tigers, going six innings giving up one earned run on four hits while striking out three.
Campbell was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Dornes was 3-for-5 at the plate with an RBI. Before the game, seniors Brol,
Jeff Bibbens (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport), Campbell,
Kyle Desrosiers (North Attleboro, MA/Xaverian Brothers), Dornes,
Cory Langtry (Moravia, NY/Moravia), and
Josh Rodems (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) were honored. The group led RIT to 83 wins over the last four seasons.
