ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT baseball team (18-19) used home runs from
Dave Kernan (North Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) and
Ed Hughes (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt), strong pitching, and defense to get past the University of Rochester (28-10), 5-3 at Fauver Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
Kernan and Hughes both hit their third homers of the season, which lead the team. #Justin Smith was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
Senior pitcher
Jeff Bibbens (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) picked up his first win of the season, allowing four hits and one earned run over 7 1/3 strong innings. He struck out three and walked one.
Charles Yarrington (Rochester, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) picked up his second save in less than a week, pitching the final 1 2/3 innings, striking out the final batter of the game.
With RIT ahead 4-3 in the eighth inning, Rochester's Steve Just hit a long fly to center that looked be extra bases, but outfielder
Kreag Bradley (Victor, NY/Victor) sped back and put his glove up to spear the ball and keep the lead intact.
RIT scored twice in the top of the first inning on a two-run homer by Kernan. Smith walked,and with two outs, Kernan went deep for his third homer of the year.
The Tigers stretched their lead to 4-1 in the top of the eighth inning on a one-out, two-run bomb by Hughes. over left field fence that scored
Geoff Dornes (Landsville, PA/Hempfield), who walked.
Rochester cut the lead to 4-3 on a two-run homer by Andy Cannon of Bibbens in the bottom of the eighth inning. RIT got insurance in ninth, as Kernan singled in Smith, who doubled to lead off the inning.
RIT avenged a 14-4 loss to the Yellowjackets at RIT Field on April 13. Rochester stole 11 bases in that game. They did not steal a base on Tuesday.
The Tigers wrap up their season on Wednesday with a non-conference home game against perennial power SUNY Cortland at 3 p.m. RIT will honor its seven seniors before the game. There will also be a BBQ sponsored by the RIT Student Athlete Advisory Committee.
