ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT baseball team (10-7, 2-2 Empire 8) had its eight game winning streak snapped on Saturday, losing a pair of games to Empire 8 rival St. John Fisher (10-8, 2-2 Empire 8) on a warm and sunny Saturday afternoon at RIT Field. RIT dropped game one, 5-4 and lost game two in 11-innings, 9-7.
RIT nearly came back from a 5-0 deficit in game one. RIT had the tying run at third with two outs in the seventh, as Dornes hit a rocket right at the shortstop for the final out of the game.
Sean Osterman was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI for Fisher. Andrew Van Slyke earned the win on the mound for Fisher. Geoff Martone earned the save.
Mike Marsillo (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) took the loss for RIT, allowing seven hits and five runs over 5 2/3 innings. He allowed just one earned run.
Charles Yarrington (Rochester, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) pitched the final 1 /13 innings for RIT.
Kreag Bradley (Victor, NY/Victor),
Ed Hughes (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt), and
Dave Kernan (North Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) had two hits apiece for the Tigers.
Game two looked to be a slugfest, with RIT scoring five times in the bottom of the first, but Fisher holding a 6-5 lead after two innings of play. With RIT trailing 7-6, Dornes led off the bottom of the seventh inning by hitting a monstrous home run to right field, tying the game at 7.
The Cardinals took the lead for good in the 11th inning, scoring a pair of runs sandwiched around two RIT errors.
Jon Gibbs was 3-for-6 with two RBI. Leo Fusilli was 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. Teagen Barresi was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI for the Cardinals.
Chris Brol (Ijamsville, MD/Urbana) was 3-for-6 with three RBI for RIT.
Jeffrey Creagh (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) was 4-for-6 with a pair of runs scored and RBI. Hughes was 2-for-3 with a run scored and run batted in.
Jeff Bibbens (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) pitched well in relief for RIT, taking over for
Kyle Desrosiers (North Attleboro, MA/Xaverian Brothers) in the third inning and allowing just six hits and one run over 6 1/3 innings of work.
Yesterday, RIT won a pair of one-run games against the Cardinals, 2-1, and 7-6.
The Tigers return to action on Wednesday as they travel to SUNY Brockport for a single, nine-inning game at 4 p.m.
