Baseball beats Brockport in 12 innings

ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (14-12) baseball team defeated Brockport State (18-15) 5-4 in 12 innings on a cold afternoon at RIT Field. The Tigers scored in the bottom of the twelfth with the bases loaded on an error by the Golden Eagles.

With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the 12th, RIT's Ed Hughes (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) appeared to hit into an inning-ending double-play, but Brockport first baseman Nate Parrino could not come up with the throw from short allowing Ryan Campbell (Brockport, NY/Brockport) to score the winning run from third.

The Tigers had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth with one out and the bases loaded. Senior Geoff Dornes (Landsville, PA/Hempfield) flew out to left and Ben Robertson (Mecklenburg, NY/Trumansburg) was thrown out at the plate trying to score from third.

RIT scored two in the second inning on an RBI single by Josh Rodems (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) and a RBI ground out by Robertson. The Tigers made it 3-0 with another run in the fifth. With two on and one out Dave Kernan (North Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) grounded out to short scoring Campbell from third.

Jeff Bibbens (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) was outstanding for RIT. He went seven innings allowing three runs on eight hits. He struck out five and walked only one.

Brockport took a 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth plating four runs in the inning. The Golden Eagles scored four runs on four hits including a two-run single by freshman Jake Coleman that gave Brockport its first lead of the game.

The Tigers responded in the bottom of the eighth with a run to tie the score at 4-4. With two outs in the inning Kyle Desrosiers (North Attleboro, MA/Xaverian Brothers) was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a passed ball. He scored on a RBI double by Ed Hughes (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) to tie the score at 4-4.

Brad Wright (Baldswinville, NY/C.W. Baker) came in and shut down Brockport State, throwing three shut out innings of relief. He allowed no runs, one hit and struck out two.

Frank DiPinto (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) came in and pitched a scoreless top of the twelfth to pick up the win. In all the Tigers bullpen went five innings allowing one run on two hits and three strike outs.

Hughes led the Tigers with three hits in six at bats. He scored a run an drove in a run. Campbell went 2-for-3 with three walks and two runs scored.

The Tigers return to Empire 8 action on Saturday, May 1 versus Stevens. First pitch of the double header in Hoboken, New Jersey is at 1 pm.
