Baseball scores 22 runs in doubleheader split against Utica

ROCHESTER, NY -
The RIT baseball team (13-12, 3-3 Empire 8) split an Empire 8 doubleheader against Utica (7-17, 2-4 Empire 8) on Saturday afternoon at RIT Field. RIT rolled to a 17-0 win in game one, but dropped an 8-5 decision in game two.

RIT pounded out a season-high 21 hits and scored 11 runs in the bottom of the third inning in game one. All nine Tiger starters had at least one hit.

#Ryan Campbell ripped a career-high four hits, going 4-for-5 with a double, triple, and two singles. He also scored four runs and drove in a pair of runs. Justin Smith (Livonia, NY/Livonia) was 3-for-5 with his first collegiate home run, three runs scored and three RBI. Kyle Desrosiers (North Attleboro, MA/Xaverian Brothers) was 3-for-3 with three runs scored, while Josh Rodems (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Ben Robertson (Mecklenburg, NY/Trumansburg) and Ed Hughes (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) each had two hits.

Senior pitcher Geoff Dornes (Landsville, PA/Hempfield) picked up his fourth win of the season, going the distance, tying his career-high with nine strikeouts. He scattered seven hits. At the plate, Dornes walked three times and stole two bases.

In game two, Desrosiers and Rodems continued their hot hitting, with three hits apiece. Desrosiers was 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while Rodems was 3-for-3 with two RBI. Dave Kernan (North Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) was 2-for-3 with a run batted in.

Utica scored twice in the fifth inning to break a 4-4 tie and twice more in the seventh inning for insurance.

With Utica up 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth, Utica right fielder Kevin Oquendo threw out Desrosiers at home after a fly ball hit by Smith, preserving the lead.

Oquendo was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a run batted in. Adam Bittel was 2-for-3 with a home run, three runs scored, and run batted, while Adam Keller drove in four runs without recording an official at-bat. He walked twice with the bases loaded and hit two sacrifice flies.

The same two teams meet at RIT Field on Sunday for a doubleheader that gets underway at 11 a.m.
