WEST SPRINGFIELD, MA – The RIT (14-9-1, 14-3-1 AHA) men's hockey team completed the weekend sweep with a 4-0 win over American International College (3-18-2, 3-14-2 AHA) on Saturday night. The Tigers featured four different goal scorers as senior
Jared DeMichiel (Avon, CT/) posted his third shutout of the season.
RIT dominated from the opening face-off, out shooting the Yellowjackets 44-18. RIT went 0-for-3 on the power play and held AIC scoreless in five attempts.
Dan Ringwald (Oakville, Ontario/),
Sean Murphy (Owatonna, MN/),
Tyler Brenner (Linwood, Ontario/) and
Adam Hartley (West Vancouver, British Columbia/Surrey Eagles) were the RIT goal scorers.
Tyler Mazzei (Kelowna, British Columbia/) had a pair of assists for RIT.
The Tigers are now tied for first place in the AHA standings with Air Force. Both teams have 29 points, but RIT has played four less games.
RIT out-shot AIC 17-6 in the first period but mustered only one goal.
Dan Ringwald (Oakville, Ontario/) scored for the Tigers at 14:59 of the first on assists from
Tyler Mazzei (Kelowna, British Columbia/) and
Andrew Favot (King City, Ontario/). Mazzei fed Ringwald at the point, he skated in and fired a well placed wrist shot that beat Ben Meisner low for his seventh tally of the season.
The Tigers scored a pair of goals in the second period to take a 3-0 lead. Murphy scored two minutes into the second on an assist from
Stevan Matic (Burnaby, British Columbia/). Matic intercepted an attempted breakout by an AIC defender and jammed the puck in front. Murphy drove hard to the net and poked home the puck for his third of the season.
Brenner scored his first of the game and third of the weekend at 19:24 of the second to give RIT a three-goal lead.
Alan Mazur (Burnaby, British Columbia/) fired a slap shot from the point that Brenner deflected in for his sixth of the season.
Hartley scored the games final goal at 4:38 of the third to give RIT a 4-0 lead.
Scott Knowles (Riverside, Ontario/) started the play with a pass up to
Brent Alexin (West Seneca, NY/). He skated into the zone and fed Hartley who back-handed a shot for his fourth of the season.
DeMichiel stopped all 18 shots he faced for his third shutout of the month. He is now 13-2-1 in AHA play this season.
The Tigers return home next weekend for a two-game series against Bentley. Friday's game gets underway at 7:05 pm. Saturday's game is “Make the Rink Pink” night. All proceeds from the auctioning off of the RIT pink jerseys will be donated to the Lipson Cancer Center at Rochester General Hospital. Saturday's contest begins off at 7:05 p.m.
