OSWEGO, NY - Junior
Geoff Dornes (Landsville, PA/Hempfield) (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) tossed a complete-game, five-hit shutout to lead the RIT baseball team (19-20) to a 2-0 victory over SUNY Oswego in the regular season finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon. Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was halted after the first inning due to inclement weather.
Dornes was masterful on the mound for RIT, allowing just five singles, while striking out six and walking three. He faced 27 batters.
The Tigers tallied the only runs they needed in the top of the third inning as sophomore second baseman
Justin Smith (Livonia, NY/Livonia) (Livonia, NY/Livonia) hit a single with one out to score junior left fielder
Ryan Campbell (Brockport, NY/Brockport) (Brockport, NY/Brockport) from second base. Two batters later, Dornes, drove in senior
Anthony Culotta (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) on a sacrifice fly.
Both teams could only muster five hits.
Culotta was 2-for-3 with a run scored for RIT.
The second game of the doubleheader only made it through the bottom of the first inning, with RIT scoring three unearned runs in the top of the inning while Oswego tied the score in the bottom half of the inning with three unearned runs as well with two outs, before a consistent band of heavy rains, wind, and lightning forced its cancellation. The Tigers finish the 2009 season with a 19-20 mark, while Oswego finishes the year at 20-14.
