ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT baseball team (6-13) split a doubleheader against visiting Cazenovia (6-9) on Sunday afternoon at RIT Field. RIT took game one 8-4, while Cazenovia rallied to win game two, 4-2. In game one, RIT set a new team record by stealing 10 bases. The Tigers stole 14 bases in the two games.

Justin Smith (Livonia, NY/Livonia)# (Livonia, NY/Livonia) was hit by a pitch and stole second base. #
Geoff Dornes (Landsville, PA/Hempfield)# (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) followed with a walk. Both players advanced a base on a passed ball. Senior shortstop
Jeremy Tosh (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg) (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg) drove both home with a sharp single to left field.
After Cazenovia cut the Tiger lead in half with an unearned run in the top of the second, RIT broke the game open with four runs aided by four straight hits in the third inning.
Smith was hit by a pitch for the second straight plate appearance and stole second base. Dornes walked and executed a double steal with Smith. Tosh drove in Smith with an RBI ground out to make it 3-1 RIT. With two outs,
Raffaele Parisi (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) singled in Dornes. After a single by
Jeffrey Creagh (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks),
Josh Rodems (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) plated both Parisi and Creagh with a single to right field, making the score 6-1.
In the fifth inning, sophomore
Ed Hughes (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) set a team record by stealing three bases in one inning. He stole second and third, then executed a perfect double steal with Smith to score.
The 10 stolen bases in game one broke the previous record of nine, set most recently on April 20, 2008 against Utica. Smith tied a single-game team record by stealing four bases, while Hughes swiped three bags. Dornes stole a pair of bases, while Tosh swiped a bag as well.
Tosh drove in three runs, while Dornes scored three times. He walked twice and was hit by a pitch. Smith was hit by a pitch twice as well.
Mike Marsillo (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) earned the win in game one for RIT, allowing eight hits and one earned run in six innings. He struck out seven and walked none to pick up his second win of the year.
Chad Salls, who took the loss on the mound for Cazenovia, hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning. He was one of four Wildcats to have two hits.
In game two, Cazenovia rallied from a 2-1 deficit with three runs in the top of the seventh inning to win 4-2. The Wildcats ripped four hits in the seventh inning, highlighted by the go-ahead single by Bryan Atkins, which scored Brandon Goodman.
Smith hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring
Anthony Culotta (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) from third base to break a 1-1 tie.
Rodems had an RBI single in the bottom of the third inning to score Smith.
Dornes cruised through the first six innings on the mound for RIT, scattering seven hits while striking out six, without walking a single batter. In the seventh inning, he allowed three runs on four hits before
Cory Langtry (Moravia, NY/Moravia) (Moravia, NY/Moravia) got the final out.
Dan Baird earned the win in relief for the Wildcats, allowing three hits and a run in three innings.
Smith stole five bases on the afternoon for RIT.
The Tigers are back in action on Wednesday, as they host SUNY Brockport in a single, non-league contest starting at 3:30 p.m.
