Pittsford, NY - The RIT Tigers (15-21, 9-7 E8) earned a split with Empire 8 rivals St. John Fisher (17-15, 6-8 E8) Sunday at Dugan Yard. The Tigers fell to the Cardinals 1-2 in the first game, but bounced back in the second game 11-2. RIT belted 46 hits on the weekend.
The Tigers struggled offensively in game one, managing only three hits.
Geoff Dornes (Landsville, PA/Hempfield) Landisville, PA/Hempsfield)
Matt Austin (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport), and
Anthony Culotta (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) each had a hit in the seven inning contest.
Josh Rodems (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) (Buffalo, NY/Orchard Park) scored the Tigers' only run in the top of the seventh on Culotta's single to left field. RIT threathened to tie the game, but left two runners on in the last inning.
Dornes allowed only four hits and one earned run, while adding a strikeout to his season total.
In game two, the Tigers drew first blood in the top of the second, plating three runs on three hits.
Raffaele Parisi (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) ripped a triple to left center to lead off the inning.
Ed Hughes (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) singled to center, scoring Parisi.
Ryan Campbell (Brockport, NY/Brockport) (Brockport, NY/Brockport) singled to right, moving Hughes to third. Austin reached on a fielders choice, later stealing second and forcing and errant throw from the catcher, allowing Hughes to score.
Justin Smith (Livonia, NY/Livonia) (Livonia, NY/Livonia) then grounded to second, scoring Austin from third.
RIT went on to plate two in the fourth, and three in the fifth and sixth. Campbell went 5-for-5 on the weekend, ripping five singles with one RBI and two runs scored. Hughes went 3-for-4 in game 2 with a triple, two singles, and three runs scored.
Mike Marsillo (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) picked up his fourth win of the season, striking out five over six innings.
Kyle Desrosiers (North Attleboro, MA/Xaverian Brothers) (North Attleboro, MA/Xaverian Brothers) closed for the Tigers, striking out one.
Jeremy Tosh (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg) (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg) is two RBI shy of breaking 100 career RBI. Tosh broke the previous all-time record of 94 career RBI set by Jeff Hall (1977-1980) Saturday.
With the wins over St. John Fisher, RIT has guaranteed itself at least a tie for second in the Empire 8.
The Tigers are back in action Tuesday as they host a doubleheader with Kueka at 2:00 pm at RIT Field.
