Baseball earns split versus #24 Ithaca

ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (4-12, 1-3 E8) baseball team split a pair of games against #24 Ithaca College (12-4, 3-1 E8) in Empire 8 action on Saturday afternoon. The Bombers took game one 6-1 but the Tigers rebounded and won game two 2-1.

The Tigers mustered just three hits in game one scoring their lone run on a wild pitch in the third inning. Justin Smith (Livonia, NY/Livonia) (Livonia, NY) scored on a wild pitch by Ithaca starter Tom Fishback in the bottom of the third inning.

Ithaca scored a run each in the first and second innings and threw up two runs in the third inning off of RIT starter Geoff Dornes (Landsville, PA/Hempfield) (Landsville, PA/Hempfield). The Bombers banged out nine hits in game one led by Brian Grastorf who went 3-3 with a RBI and a run scored.

Dornes, Jeff Creagh (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) and Kyle Desrosiers (North Attleboro, MA/Xaverian Brothers) (N. Attleboro, MA/Xaverian Brothers) each had hits for the Tigers. Dornes took the loss for RIT going six innings, allowing five earned runs on nine hits. He struck out two and walked one. Rory Camardello (Brighton, NY/Brighton) (Brighton, NY) pitched the seventh inning, allowing zero runs and striking out one.

Tom Fishback picked up the win for the Bombers. He went seven innings allowing no earned runs on three hits. He struck out one and walked five.

The story in ame wo was pitching. RIT's Cory Langtry (Moravia, NY/Moravia) (Moravia, NY) was spectacular, going seven innings, allowing one run on nine hits. He struck out three and walked just one batter, picking up his second win of the season.

Dan Lynch was the hard-luck loser for Ithaca. He went six innings allowing two runs on five hits while walking one and striking out four.

Ithaca led 1-0 after the top of the first until the home half of the fifth. Josh Rodems (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) (Stafford, VA) banged out a one-out single. Ed Hughes (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) followed with a single, moving Rodems to second. Ben Robertson (Mecklenburg, NY/Trumansburg) (Mecklenburg, NY/Trumansburg) sacrificed Rodems and Hughes to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. The Tigers tied the score at 1-1 when Rodems came home from third on a wild pitch by Dan Lynch.

The score remained tied until the bottom of the sixth when Jeremy Tosh (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg) (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg) ripped a home run over the left field fence, giving the Tigers a 2-1 lead.

Langtry finished what he started, getting Brian Grastorf to ground out to second with two runners on base to end the game.

RIT is off until Saturday, April 4 when they travel to SUNY Oneonta for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
