Men's Basketball Picks Up Road Win at Alfred

ITHACA, NY -
The RIT men's basketball team (11-9, 5-6 Empire 8) allowed a season-low 48 points en route to defeating Alfred University (1-18, 0-10) 68-48 in Empire 8 action on Wednesday evening.

RIT scored 15 straight points in jumping out to an early 28-9 lead.  Sophomore Adam Sweet (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) put the Tigers up 19 with a 3-pointer with 8:28 left in the opening half.  The Tigers' largest lead was 24 points, 56-32 late in the second half.

Junior guard Rick Whitwood (Wellsville, NY/Wellsville) (Wellsville, NY/Wellsville) scored a career-high 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field, drilling four 3-pointers.  He also had five rebounds and three assists.  Junior center Mark Carson (Voorheesville, NY/Voorheesville) (Voorheesville, NY/Voorheesville) just missed a double-double, with 18 points and nine rebounds. 

Freshman Shane Foster (Woodland Hills, CA/Calabasas) (Woodland Hills, CA/Calabasas) chipped in with 11 points.  Senior point guard Colin Roy (Malta, NY/Ballston Spa) (Malta, NY/Ballston Spa) had eight points, while fellow point guard Nate Korinchak (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) recorded five steals.

The 48 points allowed by the Tigers, is the lowest since they allowed 46 in an 86-46 win over D'Youville in the 2006-07 season opener.

The Tigers shot 55.3 percent from the field, including 59 percent over the final 20 minutes.  Alfred hit 38 percent of its shots.  RIT out-rebounded Alfred 32-27.  Both teams turned the ball over 18 times.

Ellis Walsh and Carl Embury had 13 and 12 points, respectively, to lead the Saxons.

RIT is back in action on Saturday, with a chance to move up in the Empire 8 standings with a home contest against Utica.  Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
