UTICA, NY -- The men's basketball rebounded from a disappointing loss on Friday with a 64-61 win at Utica College on Saturday afternoon. The win breaks a three-game losing streak and improves RIT to 4-3 overall and 1-3 in the Empire 8.
The first half was tight throughout with Utica leading 29-27 at the break. There were six ties and seven lead changes in the half. RIT shot 30% in the first half on 11-of-36 shooting from the floor. The Pioneers shot 40% from the floor in the first half.
The Tigers opened the second half with a 14-2 run, opening a 10-point lead on a layup by
Kenny Gethers (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) with 15:28 remaining in the half. He finished with six points, six rebounds and three steals.
The Pioneers responded with a run of their own and took a two-point lead on a three-pointer by James Patterson.
With 6:41 to play in the second half
Barret Zeinfeld's (Tucson, AZ/Catalina Foothills) three-pointer gave the Tigers a 55-57 lead. A lead they would not relinquish.
Zeinfeld led the Tigers with 19 points. The senior guard shot 6-of-12 from the floor including 5-of-8 from three-point land.
Mark Carson (Voorheesville, NY/Voorheesville) (Voorheesville, NY) added 14 points and 10 rebounds, while
Colin Roy (Malta, NY/Ballston Spa) and
Kenny Gethers (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) each dished out four assists.
The Tigers will host cross-town rival University of Rochester on Tuesday evening at 7 pm in Clark Gymnasium.
