RIT cut the lead to 64-61 on a
Kenny Gethers (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) lay-up with 5:52 left. Unfortunately for the Tigers, SUNY Oswego hit their foul shots and limited the Tigers to just seven points the rest of the way, going on a 17-5 run late in the contest.
The Tigers turned the ball over a season-high 22 times and were just 11-for-21 (52.4 percent) from the foul line. The Lakers shot 16-for-20 (80 percent) from the charity stripe.
Tournament MVP Tommy Downing led the Lakers with 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field. He also added seven rebounds, five steals and four assists. Nick Perioli and Mahamoud Jabbi were also named to the All-Tournament team. Perioli had 10 assists, seven points and five rebounds. Jabbi had 14 points.
Junior center
Mark Carson (Voorheesville, NY/Voorheesville) (Voorheesville, NY/Voorheesville) continued his excellent play, shooting 8-for-12 from the field en route to another double-double with 23 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks. Carson and Gethers were named to the All-Tournament team.
Rick Whitwood (Wellsville, NY/Wellsville) (Wellsville, NY/Wellsville) scored nine points and added seven rebounds.
Nate Korinchak (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) also added nine points.
Shane Foster (Woodland Hills, CA/Calabasas) (Woodland Hills, CA/Calabasas) dished out a team-high four assists.
The game was tied at 38 after 20 minutes of play, as the lead changed hands nine times.
Carson had 11 first half points to go along with nine boards for the Tigers, while Korinchak had six points. Downing tallied a team-high 10 points and three boards for the Lakers.
The Tigers shot 46 percent from the field, but turned the ball over 11 times in the opening half.
Hilbert won the third place game on Saturday afternoon, using a 20-7 run early in the second half to pull away and grind out an 87-77 win over D'Youville. Dallas Reinhard scored 23 points, added 11 rebounds and six assists for Hilbert (4-5). Malcolm Edwards, who was also named to the All-Tournament team, scored 20 points to go along with 16 rebounds and four blocks.
The Tigers advanced to the championship contest by defeating D'Youville 95-80 on Friday. Gethers and Carson scored 25 points apiece to lead the way.
SUNY Oswego defeated Hilbert 79-74 in the other Brodie first round game. Mahamoud led the Lakers with 22 points and 11 rebounds.
RIT is back in action on Friday, January 4, 2008, as they host # 16 Stevens in an Empire 8 contest starting at 8 p.m.
