Women's Basketball escapes Ithaca with a win, 44-43

ITHACA, N.Y. – The RIT women's basketball team earned a narrow 44-43 win over Ithaca in a tightly-contested Liberty League game, Friday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Ithaca led 13-11 after the first quarter before RIT tied the game 21-21 at halftime.
  • The Tigers used an 18-10 third-quarter surge, highlighted by a three-pointer from sophomore guard Caroline Henderson and key layups from junior forward Faye Kaplinski and graduate student guard Hannah Durand, to build a 39-31 lead.
  • Ithaca cut the deficit to one point with a three-pointer by Madison Gill with 2:48 remaining.
  • In the closing minutes, RIT forced a pair of turnovers, including a steal by Kaplinski, and grabbed a critical defensive rebound after Ithaca missed a potential game-winning shot in the final seconds.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Henderson led the Tigers with her second double-double of the season, finishing with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Kaplinski added 8 points to go along with a game-high 12 rebounds.
  • Durand and sophomore forward Ben Kayser-Cochran each scored 7 points for RIT.
  • The win puts the Tigers at 3-1 in the Liberty League and 6-5 overall.

RIT travels to take on William Smith for another Liberty League matchup tomorrow (Jan. 11). Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Geneva.
