Women's Basketball defeats William Smith, 68-39

GENEVA, N.Y. – Junior forward Faye Kaplinski recorded a double-double as the RIT women's basketball team defeated William Smith, 68-39, Saturday afternoon.  
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The visiting Tigers opened the game with a dominant 21-4 first-quarter run, fueled by efficient shooting. RIT shot 75 percent (9-of-12) from the field in addition to converting both of their free-throw attempts.  
  • Kaplinski scored the Tigers' first basket on a layup and later added a jumper and another layup during the opening surge.
  • Maddy Ramsgard, a junior guard, scored multiple key jumpers in the first quarter, including the final basket to make it 21-4.
  • William Smith cut into the lead in the second quarter with a 21-point frame, pulling within single digits before halftime.
  • In the third quarter, Kaplinski converted a layup and jumper on back-to-back possessions to help RIT maintain control of the game.
  • Henderson drained a three-pointer midway through the third to push the lead back to double digits.
  • Sophomore guard Sophia Spizuoco hit a three-pointer late in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring for the Tigers and finish with a career-high 11 points.
  • RIT's defense held the Herons to just two points in the fourth quarter, forcing multiple turnovers and limiting the William smith to 1-for-20 shooting.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Kaplinski recorded her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Ramsgard led all scorers with 18 points and seven rebounds as Henderson added 10 points and eight rebounds.
  • RIT shot 43.1 percent from the floor (25-for-58) and 86.7 percent from the free-throw line (13-for-15).
  • The Tigers also dominated the glass with a 52-34 rebounding advantage and finished with 17 assists and eight steals.
  • The Tigers improve to 7-5 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
 
WHAT'S NEXT
RIT travels to Union on Tuesday (Jan. 13) for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off. The Tigers will look to split the season series with the Garnet Chargers after Union defeated RIT, 69-60, on Jan. 3.
