Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Men's Hockey ties Niagara, 3-3; wins shootout, 1-0

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The RIT Men's Hockey Team skated to a 3-3 tie opposite visiting Niagara, Saturday, in Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) action at the Gene Polisseni Center. Following a scoreless overtime, the Tigers went on to win the penalty shootout, 1-0.

Niagara built a 2-0 lead midway through the first period, before RIT scored a pair of power play goals in a 17-second span to knot the game heading into the second period. The Purple Eagles scored the lone goal of the second before RIT first-year forward William Moore tied the game at 8:04 of the third to force the eventual overtime. First-year forward Evan Konyen converted the lone shot in the penalty shootout as the Tigers earned the extra point in the AHA standings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Niagara opened the scoring at 9:39 of the first, working a puck around the Tiger zone to Jonathan Ziskie for a wrist shot from the left faceoff dot that scored, near post.

The Purple Eagles took a 2-0 lead after Nicholas Niemo dropped a pass along the left boards back to Ethan Lund, who threw a puck on net tipped home by Spencer Young on the crease at 15:21.

RIT evened the score with two power-play goals in a 17-second span after Niagara stacked cross checking and hitting from behind penalties. First-year forward Zach Wigle cleaned up a shot by senior forward Austin Brimmer for a 5-on-3 goal with 2:21 on the clock before first-year forward Caleb Elfering took a Brimmer feed and scored on a rush, 5-on-4.

Niagara retook a 3-2 lead at 5:55 of the second. Grayson Dietrich grabbed a loose puck in the neutral zone and centered a pass from the left faceoff circle to Noah Hackett for a back-hander, far post.

RIT tied the score at 8:04 of the third. Senior defenseman Xavier Lapointe took a shot from the point that rebounded in front off Niagara goaltener Mitchell Day's pads. First-year forward Camden Bajzer's rebound attempt went off Day's pads but Moore ripped the loose puck inside the right post.
