Women's Basketball tops Vassar at home, 62-43

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The RIT women's basketball team defeated Vassar, 62-43, Friday evening as junior forward Faye Kaplinski scored 12 points off of 5-of-7 shooting to lead the Tigers.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • RIT stormed out to a 20-2 lead in the first quarter, holding the visiting Brewer to 1-of-12 shooting and forcing five turnovers in the opening frame.
  • Kaplinski scored six points in the first quarter, including two layups that capped the Tigers' early surge.
  • Sophomore forward Ben Kayser-Cochran hit a three-pointer and added a jumper during a 7-2 second-quarter run that pushed the lead to 25-9.
  • Senior guard Erin DiPaola's tip-in and steal in the third quarter fueled a 6-0 spurt as RIT extended its advantage to 44-26.
  • The Tigers' defense held Vassar to just three field goals in the fourth quarter, while graduate student forward Sydney Pearson and Kaplinski combined for key baskets to seal the win.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Kaplinski totaled eight rebounds to go along with her game-high 12 points; Kayser-Cochran added 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
  • DiPaola contributed eight points, six rebounds, and three assists for RIT.
  • Junior guard Ella Wilson added a season-high seven points and four rebounds off the bench.
  • RIT shot 44.8 percent from the floor (26-of-58) and out-rebounded Vassar 44-25.
  • The Tigers finished with 14 assists and eight steals, while limiting Vassar to 30.8 percent shooting.
  • The win improves the Tigers' record to 8-6 overall and 5-2 in conference play.
