SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Sophomore forward
Ben Kayser-Cochran made a driving layup with one second left in the game to lift the RIT women's basketball team past Skidmore, 47-46, in their Liberty League opener, Friday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Skidmore jumped out to a 9-4 lead after the first quarter, but RIT responded with a 20-point second quarter to take a 24-22 halftime advantage.
- Sophomore guard Caroline Henderson hit three consecutive three-pointers in the second quarter to spark the Tigers' offense.
- The Thoroughbreds regained the lead early in the third, but RIT stayed close and trailed by just two heading into the final period.
- In a back-and-forth fourth quarter featuring three ties and seven lead changes, Henderson assisted Kayser-Cochran on a clutch three-pointer with 1:35 left to put the visiting Tigers ahead, 45-43.
- After Skidmore answered with a three to take a 46-45 lead, Kayser-Cochran converted a layup with one second remaining to seal the victory.
GAME NOTES
- Henderson led RIT with 12 points on 4-of-12 shooting from beyond the arc.
- Kayser-Cochran went 4-of-9 from the field to score nine points and grabbed five rebounds.
- Junior forward Faye Kaplinski had a game-high 14 rebounds to go along with seven points, adding six assists and three blocks.
- Graduate student guard Sydney Pearson contributed six points and four rebounds, while classmate Hannah Durand added five points.
- RIT shot 30.8 percent (20-of-65) from the floor and held a 51-42 advantage on the boards.
- The Tigers finished with 12 assists and four blocks, while limiting Skidmore to 24.1 percent shooting from three-point range.
- RIT improves to 4-3 overall and starts out 1-0 in conference play.
