Women's Basketball defeats Emmanuel, 61-50

BOSTON – The RIT women's basketball team earned a 61-50 road victory over Emmanuel (Mass.) in the championship game of the Emmanuel Tip-Off Tournament, Sunday afternoon.
 
RIT used a dominant third quarter, outscoring the Saints 22-4, to take control of the game and hold off a late push from the Saints.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Tigers opened the game with a 6-0 run, including a layup and jumper from junior forward Faye Kaplinski, and led 13-11 after the first quarter. Sophomore guard Caroline Henderson hit a three-pointer with 44 seconds left to give the Tigers the edge.
  • Emmanuel outscored RIT 15-11 in the second quarter, using a 7-0 run midway through the period to take a 24-19 lead. Henderson responded with a three-pointer and two free throws to tie the game at 24 before the Saints scored in the final seconds to lead 26-24 at halftime.
  • RIT dominated the third quarter, outscoring Emmanuel 22-4. The Tigers opened the period with a 12-2 run, capped by another Henderson three-pointer. Graduate student guard Hannah Durand hit back-to-back threes late in the quarter to extend the lead to 46-30.
  • Emmanuel cut the deficit to 51-47 with a 17-5 run in the fourth quarter, but the visitors closed the game on a 10-3 run, including a Henderson three-pointer and four free throws from junior guard Maddy Ramsgard in the final minute to seal the win.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Henderson led all scorers with 22 points, shooting 7-of-16 from the field and 5-of-11 from three-point range.
  • Ramsgard scored 14 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, including five on the offensive glass.
  • Kaplinski contributed six points, six rebounds, and three blocks.
  • Senior guard Erin DiPaola dished out a team-high five assists and added five points.
  • RIT shot 42.9 percent from the field (21-of-49) and 42.1 percent from three-point range (8-of-19).
  • The Tigers went 11-of-14 from the free throw line.
  • RIT improves its record to 3-1 to start the season.

The Tigers remain on the road with their next game scheduled for this coming Saturday (Nov. 22) against Geneseo at 2 p.m.
