Women's Hockey hosts Penn State

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The RIT women's hockey team hosts Penn State for a pair of College Hockey America games this Friday and Saturday (Jan. 12-13) at the Gene Polisseni Center.

Recap (RIT at Brown)
RIT lost a pair of non-conference games at Brown last weekend, losing 4-1 and 3-0. First-year defensewoman Emma Pickering scored in RIT's 4-1 loss, Friday. Her goal at 16:52 of the third period off assists from juniors Athena Vasdani and Jessie Burks cut the Brown lead to 3-1. Junior goalie Sarah Coe made 17 saves. Sophomore goalie Sophia Bellina made 25 saves in Saturday's loss.
 
About RIT
RIT is the top defensive team in the CHA, allowing 2.24 goals per game, and blocks, averaging 14.29 per contest. The Tigers are second in the league, killing off 51-of-63 penalties (81.0%), fourth averaging 2.67 goals per game and fifth converting 13-of-80 (16.3%) of their power play chances.
 
Aquaro leads the team and is seventh in the CHA with 17 points. She is tied for first with four power play goals and tied for fifth in the league with 11 assists. Senior forward Emma Roland is second on the team 15 points. She is tied for sixth with seven goals and eight, averaging 0.33 goals per game. First-year forward Addie Alvarez is third on the team in scoring with 12 points (5g, 7a) and sophomore forward Jaidan Fahrny is fourth with 11 points (6g, 5a).   
 
Bellina leads the CHA with a 1.62 goals against average and a .945 save percentage, and is seventh averaging 21.8 saves per game. Coe is fourth in the league with a 2.72 GAA and fourth with a .915 save percentage, averaging 26.75 saves per contest.
 
Senior forward Lindsay Maloney is third in the CHA, winning 180 face offs, winning 54.2 percent of her draws. Fahrny is ninth in the league with 118 face-off wins, while junior forward Megan McCormick is fifth in the league winning 54.3 percent of her draws.
 
Pickering is second the league with 44 blocked shots, while senior defensewoman Mia Tsilemos is third with 38 blocks and McCormick is ninth with 32 blocks. Tsilemos is third in the league with a +19 and junior defensewoman Kyla Bear is fourth (+6).

About Penn State
Penn State split a pair of games against Union last weekend, losing 2-1 in overtime on Friday followed by a 6-2 win, Saturday. Senior forward Brianna Brooks scored a power play goal in Friday's overtime loss. Sophomore goalie Katie DeSa made 12 saves in net.
 
Sophomore forward Tessa Janecke had three assists in Saturday's win. Sophomore forward Katelyn Roberts and first-year defensewoman Karolina Gengelmuller each had a goal and an assist, while Brooks had two assists. Senior goalie Annie Spring made 12 saves in net to earn the win.
 
Penn State leads the CHA in scoring, averaging 3.0 goals per game. The Nittany Lions are second in the league allowing 2.41 goals per game and power play, converting 17-of-80 (21.3%) with the extra skater. Penn State is fourth, killing off 59-of-76 penalties and sixth with 222 blocked shots.
 
Janecke leads Penn State and is tied for first in the CHA with 30 points, including a league-best 22 assists. First-year forward Stella Retrum is second on the team and eighth in the league with 19 points. She and junior forward Mya Vaslet are tied for sixth in the CHA with seven goals. Brooks is third on the team with 14 points (6g, 9a).
 
Janecke leads the CHA with 376 face-off wins and is second, winning 63.3% of her draws.
 
Senior goalie Josie Bothun leads the CHA with a 1.62 goals against average and fifth with a .910 save percentage, averaging 21.82 saves per game.
 
RIT vs. Penn State
Penn State is 31-18-6 all-time against RIT. Jordyn Bear and Athena Vasdani each scored in the Tigers 2-2 tie at Penn State last season. Vasdani tied the game at 11:04 of the third period. RIT's last win was a 4-3 victory on Feb. 15, 2020.
 
Jordyn Bear has three career assists against Penn State, while Vasdani, Megan McCormick, Kylie Aquaro each have a goal and assist versus the Nittany Lions. Emma Roland and Kyla Bear each have two assist, and Coe is 0-3-4 all-time against Penn State with a 3.19 goals against average and a .924 save percentage in eight career games against the Nittany Lions.
