Christian Catalano each tallied a goal, but it was visiting Canisius coming back for a 3-2 OT victory over the No. 20/20 Tigers, Tuesday, in Atlantic Hockey action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first period, the Tigers got on the board at 7:23 of the second. First-year forward Matthew Wilde pushed a puck down the left half boards to Catalano at the point, who slid a puck over to first-year defenseman Crossley Stewart at the top of the zone. Catalano one-timed a return feed that found the net over Canisius goaltender David Fessenden's glove to open the scoring.
- Canisius answered just over five minutes later following a Tiger interference penalty. Randy Hernandez finished a Golden Griffin rush, scoring off a short cross in front of the Tiger crease from Max Kouznetsov inside the left post at 11:41 of the second.
- The Tigers retook the lead on a rising shot by Andrew from the left point off a feed from fifth-year defenseman Gianfranco Cassaro at 12:52 of the third.
- Canisius later retied the game after winning a faceoff in the Tiger zone that deflected toward Scarfone, who tipped puck away from the crease toward the right half boards. Golden Griffin Jackson Decker took a loose puck off an errant Tiger pass and scored on a shot from the right point over a screened Scarfone with 5:16 left in regulation
- In overtime, Canisius scored the game-winner after the Tigers were whistled for goalkeeper interference. Hernandez roofed a shot from the slot over Scarfone's glove with 2:51 on the clock for the deciding tally.
GAME NOTES
- RIT lost back-to-back games for the first time this season after following up its first six losses with a victory.
- Canisius went 2-for-8 on the power play, while RIT finished 1-for-6 as the teams combined for 14 penalties and 28 PIM.
- RIT out-shot Canisius, 46-31, as Fessenden finished with a career-high 44 saves, including 20 in the third period.
- Senior defenseman Dimitri Mikrogiannakis tied a career-high with four blocked shots.
- Cassaro logged his 17th point of the season and 60th of his career.
- Wilde added his 15th point of the season and has five points (4G/1A) over the last six games.
- Tuesday's game was originally scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 13, but was postponed due to the winter storm that hit Western New York over the weekend.
