Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

No. 18 Men's Hockey falls 4-3 on late goal at Niagara

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – RIT senior defenseman Gianfranco Cassaro notched a game-tying, third period goal, but it was Niagara scoring the game-winner with 30.7 left in regulation to earn a 4-3 victory over the visiting No. 18 Tigers, Thursday, in Atlantic Hockey action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Niagara opened the scoring with 12:24 left in the first period after Albin Nilsson spun off the endline back into the right faceoff circle and scored on a wrist shot inside the right post.
  • The Purple Eagles converted a Tiger interference penalty for a 2-0 lead with 3:55 on the clock after Casey Carreau scored from the right faceoff circle on a cross-ice feed from Carter Randklev.
  • RIT scored the lone goal of the second period after senior forward Elijah Gonsalves knocked down a pass behind the Niagara goal. Graduate student defenseman Matt Kellenberger tipped the puck right back to Gonsalves, who skated to the front of the left post and scored, top shelf, with 2:32 on the clock.
  • Niagara retook a two-goal lead 43 seconds into the third period. Ryan Maumovski crossed a puck to Glebs Prohorenkovs in front of the right post to finish on an odd-man rush for a 3-1 edge.
  • RIT pulled back within one with 12:30 left in regulation. A pad save by sophomore goaltender Tommy Scarfone off a Niagara blast rebounded to sophomore forward Carter Wilkie in the right face-off circle. Wilkie flipped a long outlet pass to spring graduate student forward Kobe Walker through the neutral zone, who fought off a Niagara defenseman to beat Niagara goaltender Chad Veltri with a stick-side wrist shot.
  • RIT tied the game with 10:16 left in the third after junior defenseman Aiden Hansen-Bukata found Cassaro alone in the right faceoff circle with a long pass from the left point. Cassaro scored on a wrist shot over Veltri's glove.
  • Niagara won the game with 30.7 second left in regulation. A long shot from the right point deflected off Scarfone's pads into crowd in front of the crease where Prohorenkovs cleaned up the loose puck for the deciding tally.
GAME NOTES
  • Gonsalves scored his 25th-career goal.
  • Wilkie notched his 20th assist of the season and team-leading 33rd point.
  • Scarfone finished with 24 saves, including 11 in the second period.
