Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Men's Hockey defeats Army, 5-3, to complete weekend AHA sweep

WEST POINT, N.Y.  – RIT junior forward Grady Hobbs scored a career-high three points on two goals and added an assist in a 5-3 Atlantic Hockey victory at Army, Saturday.

Winners of four-straight, the first-place Tigers completed the six-point AHA weekend after also defeating the Black Knights, 4-2, in Friday's opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • RIT scored the lone goal of the first period, converting a power play goal following a five-minute contact to the head major on the Black Knights with 13:28 on the clock. A face-off to the right of the Army goal made its way around the end boards to Hobbs, who slid a puck to Andrew on the left wing. Junor forward Tanner Andrew dropped a short pass to Hobbs, who wristed a shot on goal from the top of the left faceoff circle that found the net past a partially screened goaltender.
  • RIT made it a 2-0 lead with 13:13 left in the second. Sophomore forward Simon Isabelle won a face-off in the Army zone back to the left boards. Hobbs pushed a puck forward to Isabelle in the corner, who skated down the goal like to stuff a shot off Black Knight goaltender Evan Szary's pads. Junior forward Cody Laskosky tipped a short rebound off Szary's pads before Isabelle cleaned up Laskosky's rebound inside the right post.
  • The Tigers scored with 8.9 on the second-period clock, taking advantage of an Army neutral zone turnover. Fifth-year defenseman Ryan Nicholson dropped a pass in the right faceoff circle to Hobbs, who scored on a wrist shot, near-post for a 3-0 lead after two periods.
  • Army got on the board following an RIT tripping penalty 40 seconds into the third period after Pierce Patterson scored on a long wrist shot from the point through a crowd in front of Tiger junior goaltender Tommy Scarfone with 17:43 left in regulation.
  • RIT built a 4-1 lead with 13:24 on the clock. Senior defenseman Aiden Hansen-Bukata took a shot from the right point that deflected off a defender in the slot to Cassaro on the right boards. Cassaro faked a shot to get open and scored on a wrist shot from the top of the right faceoff circle into the upper-right corner of the goal.
  • Army received an extended power play following a five-minute hitting-from-behind penalty on RIT with 5:51 left in regulation and scored twice in a 15-second span to make it a one-goal game, 4-3, with 2:07 left in regulation.
  • However, RIT sealed the game with 41 seconds on the clock after junior forward Carter Wilkie sent a long pass out of the Tiger end to first-year forward Matthew Wilde in the neutral zone, who had just come out of the penalty box, and skated in alone to score on an empty net.
GAME NOTES
  • Scarfone stopped 26 shots to improve to 6-1 this season. He also made 34 saves to earn Friday's decision, only allowing one even-strength goal during the series.
  • Wilde also had two goals in Friday's win, including the first of his Tiger career.
  • Wilkie notched his 80th-career point – the 23rd D1-era Tiger to hit the plateau - with 32 goals and 48 assists to date.
  • Cassaro scored his third goal of the season to extend a three-game point streak. All three of his goals have been game-winners.
  • Isabelle notched his second goal of the season.
