Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Men's Hockey earns 4-2 AHA victory at Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. – RIT first-year forward Matthew Wilde scored his first two career goals while junior forward Carter Wilkie added a goal and an assist to lead the Tigers to a 4-2 Atlantic Hockey victory at Army, Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Army opened the scoring with a power play goal 4:25 into the game after Trevor Smith scored on a short feed in front from Jake Hewitt.
  • RIT evened the score with 1:52 left in the period. Fifth-year defenseman Ryan Nicholson cycled a puck across the top of the zone to sophomore defenseman Gustav Blom, who wristed a shot on goal from the right point. Wilde redirected the shot in front of the crease, deflecting it past Army goaltender Evan Szary inside the left post.
  • RIT took a 2-1 lead with a power play goal with 3:12 left in the second. Senior defenseman Gianfranco Cassaro took a shot in the slot that deflected off Szary to Wilkie outside the left post. Wilkie took a shot that rebounded off Szary's pads to Wilde, who scored inside an open right post.
  • The Tigers made it a 3-1 lead with 4:02 left in regulation. Senior defenseman Aiden Hansen-Bukata hit senior forward Elijah Gonsalves with a pass inside the RIT blue line to spring an odd-man rush down the left wing. Sophomore forward Tyler Mahan took a neutral zone feed from Gonsalves and skated on goal to score over Szary's glove for what proved to be the game winner.
  • Wilkie scored shorthanded following a Tiger hooking penalty, intercepting a pass in the middle of the RIT zone and throwing a puck the length of the ice into an empty net for a 4-1 score with 2:23 on the clock.
  • The Black Knights got one back with 25.2 left in regulation after Brent Keefer tucked a short rebound past Tiger junior goaltender Tommy Scarfone
GAME NOTES
  • Scarfone totaled 34 saves for his 25th-career game with at least 30 goals. The reigning Atlantic Hockey Goaltender of the Month and Goaltender of the Week owns a 1.97 goals against average and a .941 save percentage in four league games this season.
  • Wilkie got back on track with his third multi-point game of the season after having a five-game scoring streak to start the season snapped last Saturday at Holy Cross. He leads the Tigers with nine points on five goals and four assists.
  • Mahan's tally was his first point of the season.
  • Gonsalves notched his first point of the season after missing the previous four games with a lower body injury. He now has 70 career points in 112 appearances in a Tiger sweater.
  • RIT finished 1-for-5 on the power play while killing four of five Army attempts.
  • RIT has now allowed the first goal in five of seven games this season, but has come back to win three.
