WORCESTER, Mass. – RIT junior forward
Tanner Andrew scored the overtime game-winning goal off an assist from senior defenseman
Aiden Hansen-Bukata in a 3-2 victory at Holy Cross, Friday, in Atlantic Hockey action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first period, RIT junior forward Carter Wilkie found the net with 9:56 left in the second. After an extended scrum on the end boards behind the Crusader goal, senior forward Cody Laskosky tipped a puck out of a crowd around the left post to the slot where Wilkie tipped a shot past Holy Cross goaltender Jason Grande inside the right post.
- Holy Cross evened the score with a power play tally by Jack Ricketts with 14:10 remaining in the third period and appeared to have taken a 2-1 lead with 11:42 on the clock. However, the goal was taken off the board after a review of an open-ice hit with 13:02 on the clock was determined to be a five-minute major on the Crusaders.
- Holy Cross took the lead with 9:33 left in regulation after scoring shorthanded during the ensuing five minute penalty, converting a 3-on-1 break with 1:27 left in the penalty.
- RIT tied the score with 5:19 remaining in the third period. Junior forward Grady Hobbs fought a puck off the right boards in the Holy Cross zone and found sophomore defenseman Xavier Lapointe at the top of the slot. Lapointe took a wrist shot that rebounded off Grande's pads to sophomore forward Simon Isabelle in front for a short tap-in inside the right post.
- Scarfone came up with five saves in overtime, including a sliding stop during a 2-on-1 opportunity in the opening minute.
- Grande later made a diving save on a shot by Andrew with 1:38 on the clock before Holy Cross nearly won the game on the ensuing counter attack. Scarfone made one last save that rebounded to his right where Hansen-Bukata jumped on the loose puck and headed the other way. Hansen-Bukata dropped a backhanded pass through a defender to a trailing Andrew for the deciding tally with 1:20 on the clock.
