ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The RIT men's hockey team lost to visiting AIC, 7-0, in Atlantic Hockey action, Friday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Chris Theodore corralled and indirect pass off the boards in the Tiger zone and found Nico Somerville in the high slot to for a shot between RIT junior goaltender Kolby Matthews' legs 24 seconds into the contest to open a 4-0 first-period Yellow Jacket lead.
- Theodore took a neutral zone feed down the right wing and evaded a Tiger defender with a nice move to score a backhand through Matthew's pads with 11:20 on the clock.
- Blake Bennett gave AIC a 3-0 lead with 8:24 left in the period on the power play after a nice give-and-go play with Luis Lindner, scoring a one-timer from the right circle that found the back of the net through a crowd in front in front of Matthews.
- Chris Dodero walked out from the right side and one-timed a Jake Stella pass inside the right post with 7.9 seconds left in the period.
- The teams played a scoreless second period, but AIC took a 5-0 lead 14 seconds into the third after Justin Young knocked down an outlet pass in front of the Tiger crease which deflected off freshman goaltender Tommy Scarfone into the net.
- Young later redirected a shot from inside the blue line by Brett Callahan for his second of the game with 12:33 left in regulation before Aaron Grounds got behind the Tiger defense to scored past Scarfone with 6:30 remaining.
GAME NOTES
- RIT allowed the most goals since a 7-3 setback at AIC on Nov. 5, 2021.
- AIC finished 3-for-6 on the power player while RIT went 0-for-3.
- RIT also allowed three power play goals the last time it was shutout – 6-0 at Army on Dec. 11 earlier this season.
- Senior defenseman Dan Willett moved atop the RIT record books with his 155th career appearance, while senior forward Jake Hamacher played his 154th game to tie Josh Mitchell '16 for second behind Willett.
- AIC entered the night atop the Atlantic Hockey standings, while RIT was tied for third.
