Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Men's Hockey moves past Niagara, 3-2

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – RIT senior forwards Will Calverley, Jake Hamacher and Kobe Walker each scored a goal while senior defenseman Dan Willett notched two assists and five blocked shots to lead the Tigers to a 3-2 victory over visiting Niagara, Saturday, on Senior Night.

RIT (15-13-4, 11-9-4 AHA) moved into sole possession of fourth place in the Atlantic Hockey standings with two games remaining in the regular season. The top-six teams receive a first-round bye in the Atlantic Hockey Tournament, while the top-four teams are guaranteed a quarterfinal home playoff series.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Tigers took a 1-0 lead 4:46 into the contest. Willett intercepted a clearing attempt on the left boards and chipped the puck to freshman forward Grady Hobbs, who found Wilkie cutting across the crease from left to right. Hamacher took a drop pass from Wilkie in the high slot and buried a one-timer, stick side, to open the scoring.
  • Niagara tied the game with a power play goal with 6:41 left in the first after Carter Randklev corralled a pass in the high slot and scored on a shot under the center crossbar.
  • RIT scored a pair of power-play goals in a 2:16 span to take a 3-1 second-period lead. Caverley scored a one-touch redirect from the low slot off a feed from Hamacher with 8:19 on the clock before Walker came from behind the net for a shot to the short side after a give-and-go with Wilkie in the left corner with 6:03 remaining.
  • Niagara trimmed the Tigers' lead with 9:55 left in the third period after Shane Ott went in alone for a power play goal after being sprung with a feed just inside the right blueline.
GAME NOTES
  • RIT completed the two-game sweep of the Purple Eagles after also earning a 4-2 road victory on Friday night.
  • Willett's assists came on both of the Tigers' second period goals. He now has 85 career points on 11 goals and 74 assists. He has now also blocked 81 shots this winter.
  • Calverley notched his team-leading 15th goal of the season.
  • Freshman goaltender Tommy Scarfone totaled 25 saves, including 12 in the final period, to earn his fifth victory of the season. He currently owns a .911 save percentage with a 2.78 goals against average.
WHAT'S NEXT
RIT heads to Colorado next Friday and Saturday (Feb. 25-26) for a two-game set at Air Force to close the regular season. The Tigers would clinch no lower than fourth place in the final Atlantic Hockey standings with three out of the remaining six points left up for grabs.
