UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - RIT sophomore goaltender
Tommy Scarfone totaled 37 saves, but it was No. 5/5 Penn State earning a 3-1 win over the No. 20/20 Tigers, Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Penn State scored the lone goal of the first period after Chase McLane redirected a shot by Simon Mack from the top of the right faceoff circle past Scarfone with 6:50 left in the first period.
- The Nittany Lions built a 2-0 lead with 9:16 remaining in the second after Alex Servagno scored from close range after a flurry in front of Scarfone.
- RIT got within one with 3:45 left in regulation after first-year forward Tyler Mahan broke the puck out of the neutral zone and scored, short-handed, from the left faceoff circle.
- RIT pulled Scarfone for an extra skater with under 2:00 minutes remaining regulation, but Penn State put the game out of reach with an empty-net goal by Connor McMenamin with 55.7 on the clock.
GAME NOTES
- Mahan also scored the Tigers' lone goal, shorthanded, in Friday's 6-1 setback to visiting Penn State.
- RIT finished 0-for-2 on the power play, including a five-minute major at the end of the second period, while killing all three Penn State power plays it faced.
- Penn State finished with a 40-24 advantage in shots on goal.
- Scarfone made 17 saves during the second period.
- Junior forward Cody Laskosky was credited with an assist on Mahan's goal - his eighth of the season.
WHAT'S NEXT
RIT returns to Atlantic Hockey play next Friday and Saturday (Jan. 6-7) with a pair of games at Bentley. Faceoffs are set for 7:05 p.m. and 4:05 p.m., respectivley.
