Women's Basketball loses to Geneseo in season opener

ROCHESTER, NY – RIT graduate student forward Andreja Peciuraite and first-year guard Abigail Smith each scored 12 points in the Tigers 60-58 loss to Geneseo in Wednesday's season-opener.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Geneseo's Kiley Snow scored five of the Knight's first nine points, including a three-pointer with 7:31 remaining in the first quarter to give Geneseo a 9-0 lead.
  • First-year guard Erin DiPaola laid the ball in off a steal from junior guard Maya Richardson that cut the Geneseo lead to two points.
  • Kelly McLaughlin gave the Knights a 17-9 lead on her layup with three minutes remaining in the quarter, while Smith scored late in the half for the Tigers that cut the Geneseo lead to 17-11.
  • Smith scored with under four minutes to play, and again on the Tigers next possession to give RIT its first lead of the game at 24-23.
  • Sophomore forward Sonya Shivok scored with five-seconds remaining off an assist from sophomore guard Kaitlyn Bockelman that cut the Geneseo lead to 28-26 at halftime.
  • Bockelman scored early in the third quarter to cut the Geneseo lead to 31-28, while first-year guard Ansley Orrell tied the game at 34-34 on her three-pointer with 3:18 remaining in the third.
  • Lauren Romito gave the Knights a 40-36 lead on her layup in off an assist from Kerry Dennin late in the third, but Smith scored with time running out to make it a four-point deficit for the Tigers.
  • Bockelman knotted the score at 55-55 on her free throw with 1:11 to play in the fourth, but Mackenzie Reigle made one-of-two free throws with 28-seconds to increase the Geneseo lead to 60-55.
  • Junior guard Emma Waite drained a three-pointer with 10-seconds to play to make it a two-point game.
  • The Tigers had a chance in the closing seconds blocked by a Knights defender.
 
GAME NOTES
  • RIT shot 34.4 percent from the floor on 22-of-64 shooting.
  • The Tigers were 7-of-23 from beyond the arc, and went 7-of-11 from the foul line.
  • Geneseo out-rebounded RIT, 42-34.
  • Waite finished with 10 points for the Tigers, while Orrell tallied 10 points off the bench.
