ROCHESTER, N.Y. – RIT senior forward
Jake Joffe notched a pair of goals in the final minute of regulation, but it was visiting Niagara earning a 5-3 victory in Atlantic Hockey action, Friday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Niagara scored the lone goal of the first period after Shane Ott fed Lars Bodne from behind the net for a short finish inside the right post with 10:19 on the clock.
- The Purple Eagles took a 2-0 lead with 13:02 left in the second after Carter Randklev snapped a cross from Ryan Naumovski inside an open left post.
- RIT got on the board with 11:10 left in the second period. Junior forward Colton Trumbla hustled a puck down the left-wing boards and centered a puck from the deep in the Niagara zone to senior forward Andrew Petrucci in the slot for a wide-open finish and his first goal of the season.
- Niagara scored finished the period with two more goals, including Rodne's second with 4:24 remaining to build a 4-1 lead into the third period before Jordan Wishman later made it a 5-1 game with 6:52 left in regulation.
- With under a minute to play, junior forward Andrew Rinaldi played a puck off the left-wing boards in the Niagara zone to Joffe, who scored on a wrist shot with 56 seconds in regulation. On the ensuing face-off, Joffe threw three pucks on goal, before his third off a failed clear from the point made it through a crowd with 26 seconds remaining.
GAME NOTES
- Joffe notched his first career two-goal game and his second multi-point game. He also had a goal and an assist in the Tigers' 9-5 setback to visiting Sacred Heart on Nov. 15, 2019.
- Petrucci notched his second point of the season and first goal since a 3-2 win over visiting Canisius on Jan. 20, 2021.
- Trumbla's assist was his first point of the season and first since notching a goal during a 7-4 win at Canisius on Jan. 24, 2020.
- Freshman Tommy Scarfone totaled 34 saves, including 19 in the opening 20 minutes, for his second career 30-plus save outing. He made a career-high 39 saves in the Tigers' 6-0 setback at Notre Dame (Oct. 22) during his first collegiate start.
- Senior defenseman Dan Willett made his 150th career appearance in a RIT sweater to move into a four-way tie for third place in program history with Adam Hartley (2009-13), Greg Noyes (2010-14) and Brad McGowan (2011-15). Senior forward Jake Hamacher also played his 149th game for the Tigers.
