ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT baseball team (10-9, 5-3 Liberty League) swept both ends of a doubleheader from Tiger Stadium versus Union College (6-10, 4-4 Liberty League) Sunday afternoon. RIT won game one, 2-1 and completed the sweep with a 7-4 victory in game two.
In game one, RIT would score both of its runs with two outs in the top of the third inning, as
Kyle Terzini (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) would hit an infield single in
Joey Mylott (Aurora, OH/Western Reserve Academy) with
Daniel Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) scoring on a throwing error. The Dutchmen would cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third, as Anthony Amoroso doubled home Joe Ganim.
Pitching would dominate from there, as RIT's
Stevie Branche (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz) and Union's Josh Garber locked up in a strong duel. Branche would shut the door on Union, throwing his second straight complete-game, scattering six hits and two walks, while striking out four batters for his second win of the season.
Garber was strong on the mound for Union, allowing five hits and two runs (one earned) in 6 1/3 innings. Colin Nye would get the final two outs of the seventh inning.
In game two, Union would take an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning before RIT roared back with three runs in the top of the third inning and four more in the fourth to go up 7-2.
Daniel Zeglen (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) had a clutch two-run single for RIT in the third inning, while
Kyle Watson (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) drove in a pair with a fourth-inning single.
Union out-hit RIT, 10-7, but the Tigers drew eight walks. Zeglen and Watson both had two hits and three RBI. Terzini and
Patrick Blackall (Hershey, PA/Hershey) both walked twice and scored a pair of runs.
Patrick Mylott (Aurora, OH/Western Reserve Academy) added two hits.
RIT's bullpen did an excellent job, firing eight innings.
Collin Reformat (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) earned the win on the mound, allowing three hits and two runs, while striking out three batters in three innings.
Matt Vitro (Carmel, NY/Carmel) allowed a pair of unearned runs with two strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings, while
Jon Opalewski (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) added a scoreless inning of relief.
Michael Campbell (Honeoye Falls, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) picked up his second save of the season, pitching the final 1 1/3 of scoreless relief.
Jack Koch was 2-for-5 with a run scored and RBI to lead Union in game two, while Matt Toy drove in a pair of runs. Andy Labeck took the loss on the mound.
RIT would take three of four games this weekend against the defending Liberty League Champion Dutchmen. The Tigers moved into third place in the Liberty League standings.
RIT is back in action on Wednesday with a non-conference home contest versus St. John Fisher that gets underway at 4 p.m. from Tiger Stadium. RIT heads to Liberty League leader Clarkson University for four games next weekend.
