Baseball earns doubleheader split versus Liberty League foe Union

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT baseball team (8-9, 3-3 Liberty League) split a home doubleheader versus Liberty League rival Union College (6-8, 4-2 Liberty League) from sunny Tiger Stadium Saturday. RIT rallied to win game one in walk-off fashion, 4-3 while Union took game two, 6-4.

In game one, RIT trailed 3-0 before roaring back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ian Libby (Melrose, MA/Malden Catholic) walked with one out and moved to second on a single by Kyle Watson (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool). Both men moved up on a balk, before Navada Waterman (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport) drove both in with a double to make it 3-2 Union. Joey Mylott (Aurora, OH/Western Reserve Academy) followed with a double to drive in Waterman, tying the game at 3-3.

RIT would win the game on a walk-off wild pitch for the second straight game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Libby led off with a walk and moved to second after Watson executed a sacrifice bunt. Waterman struck out but reached base on a passed ball by the Union catcher, allowing Libby to move to third. With Mylott batting, Libby would score on a wild pitch to win the game for RIT.

Libby reached base all three times for RIT, walking three times and scoring a pair of runs. Daniel Zeglen (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) scattered eight hits and allowed three runs (two earned) over six innings, striking out five batters. Michael Campbell (Honeoye Falls, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) picked up his second win of the season in relief, throwing just six pitches in a perfect top of the seventh for RIT.

Sean Cullen and Elias Kuhns had two hits apiece to lead the Union attack in game one. James Salemme started for the Dutchmen and allowed three runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings. Chris Murdock did not allow a hit, allowed one run on a walk, while striking out five batters.

In game two, Union would lead 1-0 and 3-1 before RIT would battle back to tie both times. The Dutchmen would take the lead for good with three runs on four hits in the top of the seventh inning and hang on from there.

Union out-hit RIT, 10-7 in game two. Colin Kelly went 3-for-5 with a double, run scored and RBI. Joe Ganim and Cullen added two hits apiece, while Jack Koch reached base three times, scoring two runs.

Dominic Nardone started for the Dutchmen, allowing one hit and one run, while striking out six batters in four innings. Murdock would come back on in relief in game two and despite giving up five hits and three runs in 3 2/3 innings, earned the win. Colin Nye earned his first save, firing 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Daniel Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) had two hits, including a double to lead the RIT attack. Daniel Zeglen (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) slammed his second home run of the season, a two-run shot, in the bottom of the sixth inning, to tie the game at 3-3. Waterman was also 1-for-3 with a run scored and RBI.

John Mikolaicyk (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) took the loss on the mound for RIT, allowing five hits and four runs (three earned), while striking out three batters in six innings. Jon Opalewski (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) pitched two scoreless innings in relief for the Tigers.

RIT and Union complete the weekend series Sunday with two more games from Tiger Stadium. First pitch of the doubleheader will be at noon.
