BROCKPORT, NY – The RIT baseball team (15-13) defeated The College of Brockport (15-17), 6-3 from the Clark V. Whited Complex on Wednesday afternoon. The Tigers have now won three straight games.
The Tigers jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the second inning and never trailed. RIT led the game off with back-to-back singles from
Navada Waterman (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport) and
Daniel Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem).
Patrick Blackall (Hershey, PA/Hershey) would get the Tigers on the board by reaching safely on a fielder's choice, which scored Waterman. Later in the inning,
Luke McNamara (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) would ground out to the shortstop, scoring Blackall to give RIT a 2-0 lead after one inning of play.
In the top of the second, the Tigers again would lead off the inning with back-to-back singles from
Jason Schulz (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and
Kyle Terzini (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool). Waterman doubled to right field scoring Schulz and Dan Zeglen flew out to centerfield, plating Terzini, extending the Tigers lead to 4-0 after two.
Brockport would answer in the bottom of the second. Aaron Cook reached safely off of a bunt followed by a Daniel DelGaizo walk. They would both score off of a RIT error. In the sixth inning, Anthony Eaton doubled to left field to put himself in scoring position. He would score after Justin Valentino doubled down the left field line to cut the Tigers lead to 4-3.
In the top of seventh inning, Schulz would come up big with two insurance runs as he singled to right-center, scoring both
Joey Mylott (Aurora, OH/Western Reserve Academy) and
Patrick Mylott (Aurora, OH/Western Reserve Academy) to extend RIT's lead to 6-3.
The Tigers threw eight different pitchers in the game.
Trevor Povlock (Fairport, NY/Fairport) got the start and recorded the win, striking out the side in the opening frame. RIT allowed two earned runs off of six hits and three walks. Capra closed out the game to earn his his first save of the season.
Kobie Punchard took the loss for Brockport giving up four runs in the first inning. Six total Golden Eagles pitched giving up six earned off of nine hits and four walks.
RIT is back in action this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders at Liberty League foe Vassar College. Saturday's doubleheader will get underway at 1 p.m., while Sunday's pair is scheduled to start at 12 p.m. The Tigers will honor their seniors prior to the start of Saturday's contests.
