ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT baseball team (17-13, 11-5 Liberty League) cruised to a doubleheader sweep over Vassar College (14-22, 7-15 Liberty League) in the cold and wind at Tiger Stadium Saturday afternoon. RIT took game one, 12-2 and won game two, 12-7.
Daniel Zeglen (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) drove in his 100th career run in game two.
RIT honored seniors
Michael Campbell (Honeoye Falls, NY/McQuaid Jesuit),
Ben Clough (Tolland, CT/Tolland),
Patrick Mylott (Aurora, OH/Western Reserve Academy),
Jason Schulz (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and Zeglen between games.
In game one, RIT scored four runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings to roll to the win. RIT out-hit Vassar, 11-4 and had 11 more reach base by either a walk or hit by pitch.
Joey Mylott (Aurora, OH/Western Reserve Academy) reached base four times, going 3-for-3 with a double, triple, walk, two runs scored and three RBI.
Kyle Watson (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) was 2-for-4 with a walk, run scored and two RBI.
Kyle Terzini (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) was 2-for-3 with an RBI and walk, while
Daniel Zeglen (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) drove in a pair of runs.
Daniel Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) and
Jason Schulz (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) both reached base three times.
RIT starting pitcher
Stevie Branche (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz) continued his excellent 2019 season, striking out the first seven Brewers batters he faced. He went six innings, allowing four hits and two runs, while striking out a season-high 11 batters on 95 pitches in six innings for his fourth win of the season. Clough pitched a perfect seventh inning in relief.
Matt Schwartz went 2-for-3 with a solo homer to lead Vassar offensively in game one.
Vassar would jump out to a quick 3-0 lead in game two before RIT scored seven unanswered runs, including six in the bottom of the third inning. Vassar would cut the RIT lead to 7-6 in the top of the fourth inning, before RIT scored twice in the sixth and three times in the seventh to put the game away.
The Tigers had 12 hits and drew nine walks. Capra, Schulz,
Luke McNamara (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) and
Patrick Mylott (Aurora, OH/Western Reserve Academy) all reached base three times apiece. Zeglen became the sixth player in RIT's program history to drive in 100 career runs, scoring
Patrick Blackall (Hershey, PA/Hershey) on a fielder's choice in RIT's six-run third inning.
Blackall would go 2-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI, while Capra scored three times. Terzini also drove in a pair of runs.
Liam Barry (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) recorded his first collegiate win on the mound, allowing just one run on four hits, while striking out three batters in 3 2/3 key innings of relief.
Michael Campbell (Honeoye Falls, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) got RIT out of a big jam in the second inning, while Capra capped off his big day by throwing two scoreless innings to close out the Brewers.
Daniel Bonfiglio went 4-for-4 with a double and two RBI to lead Vassar's offensive attack in game two.
The Tigers now lead the all-time series between the two schools, 14-11. RIT's two wins keeps them in second place in the Liberty League standings.
RIT and Vassar will conclude the weekend series with a second doubleheader at noon on Sunday, which will be played at Monroe Community College.
