Baseball opens RussMatt Invitational with loss to Salve Regina

Box Score WINTER HAVEN, FL – The RIT baseball team (1-3) opened play at the 2019 RussMatt Invitational by falling to Salve Regina (2-3) by a score of 8-6 from Chain of Lakes Stadium Saturday evening.
 
RIT led 4-0 and 6-2 before Salve Regina rallied, scoring once in the seventh inning and five times in the bottom of the eighth to rally and defeat the Tigers.
 
RIT jumped out to the early lead, as Daniel Zeglen (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) slammed a two-run home run in the top of the first inning. John Mikolaicyk (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) singled in Kyle Terzini (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) in the second inning to make it 3-0, while Patrick Blackall (Hershey, PA/Hershey) hit a run-scoring single to give RIT a 4-0 lead in the third inning.
 
After Salve Regina scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning, RIT would respond with an unearned run of its own in the fourth and a bases loaded walk from Patrick Mylott (Aurora, OH/Western Reserve Academy) in the sixth inning to make it 6-2.
 
Salve Regina would score five times on four hits in the bottom of the eighth inning. The big hit was a two-run double by Madden Ward that gave them the lead for good.
 
Zeglen was 3-for-4 with a home run, double, two runs scored and two RBI. Terzini was 3-for-4 with a double and run scored, while Navada Waterman (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport) went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base.
Starting pitcher Stevie Branche (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz) was strong on the mound for the Tigers, allowing just four hits and two unearned runs, while striking out eight batters in six innings.  
 
Ward was 3-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and three RBIs for Salve Regina.

RIT has a quick turnaround, playing on Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. against Franklin and Marshall College from Lake Myrtle Park Field #7 in Auburndale, Fla.
