GENESEO, NY – RIT's 4 x 100-meter relay team broke a 41-year old school record and
Matthew Funicelli (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) snapped a 45-year old mark in the discus, as the RIT men's track and field team began its 2019 outdoor season by competing at the SUNY Geneseo Early Season Invitational on Saturday.
RIT's 4 x 100-meter relay team of
Matthew Lienhard (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic),
Max Gloskey (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas),
Stephen Morrissey (New Milford, CT/Trinity-Pawling School) and
Curtis Geiger (Allentown, PA/Emmaus) enjoyed a tremendous showing, winning the event by a half second over Brockport's quartet in a time of 42.08 seconds, which broke a 41-year old school mark. It is a top-10 time in all of Division III to date this season.
Lienhard also won the individual 100-meter dash in a speedy time of 10.71 seconds, which was also just 15 one-hundredths of a second shy of a 21-year old school mark.
Funicelli fired the discus 48.95 meters to break Bob Masiulis' previous school mark of 47.33 meters. He finished third in the event. It is a top-10 throw in all of Division III this season.
Zack Wigent (Fariport, NY/Fairport) finished fifth in the finals of the 110-meters with a time of 16.42 seconds. He went nine one-hundredths of a second quicker in the preliminaries. Gloskey finished fifth in the prelims, crossing the finish line in 15.57 seconds. Kobe Oley was fifth in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing in 1:02.20.
Geiger and
Christopher Callejo (West Babylon, NY/Patchouge-Medford) finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 400-meters. Geiger crossed the finish line third in 51.12 seconds, while Callejo was right behind, six one-hundredths of a second back in fourth. Morrissey placed eighth in 52.00 seconds.
Evan Feigel (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) finished third in the 1,500-meters with a snappy time of 4:08.49.
Andrew Chabot (Campton, NH/Plymouth Regional) (4:10.68) and
Dan Jones (Lockport, NY/Lockport) (4:11.81) were ninth and tenth, respectively.
Zach Thesier (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) was fourth in the 800-meters with a time of 2:02.40, while Jones placed sixth in 2:03.25 and Chabot finished eighth in 2:03.40.
The Tigers had a 4 x 100-meter relay "B" squad of
Jon Ennin (Sunnyvale, TX/Sunnyvale),
Sodiq Alaraba (Lagos, Nigeria/DoEstdot International),
Devante Marshall (Gloversville, NY/Mayfield) and
Christopher Callejo (West Babylon, NY/Patchouge-Medford) that crossed the finish line fourth in 44.82 seconds.
Matthew Woods (Clarence, NY/Clarence),
Chase Schuster (New Milford, CT/New Milford ),
AJ Wells (Clay, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse ) and Raphael Abel were sixth in 45.78 seconds.
In addition to Funicelli's school mark, RIT's throwers excelled on the day, as
Ethan Ettienne (Lanham, MD/Model Secondary School for the Deaf) finished third in the hammer throw, firing it 48.27 meters.
Zach Darling (Rome, PA/Northeast Bradford) finished seventh with a throw of 46.30 meters. Funicelli finished fifth in the shot put with a toss of 14.02 meters. Darling was seventh with a throw of 13.28 meters, while
Mickey Evans (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North) placed tenth, firing it 12.87 meters. Connor Murdock finished sixth in javelin throw, firing it 42.99 meters.
Jack Smith (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) led a group of RIT pole vaulters, placing third overall, clearing 4.56 meters. Thomas Hames, Alberto Lafuente Veron and
Nick Baxter (Windsor, NY/Windsor) all tied for seventh, clearing 4.26 meters. Wigent was eighth in the high jump, clearing 1.79 meters.
RIT returns to action on Saturday, April 6 at 10 a.m. at the Hamilton College Invitational.
