ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT men's track and field team defeated five other schools to win the 2019 Tiger Invitational from the Gordon Field House Friday night. RIT finished with a team score of 237 points, 103 ahead of runner-up St. John Fisher College.
Max Gloskey (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas),
Curtis Geiger (Allentown, PA/Emmaus) and
Matthew Lienhard (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) hit the finish line together in the 60-meter dash, as three one-hundredths of a second separated the trio, who finished 1-2-3. Gloskey finished in 7.12 seconds, while Geiger crossed in 7.14 and Lienhard, 7.15 seconds.
Daniel Giuliano (Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) finished second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.71 meters, while
Dustin Van Kirk (Canton, CT/Canton) placed third in 9.02 meters and
Zack Wigent (Fariport, NY/Fairport) was fourth (9.30 meters).
The 4 x 200-meter relay team of Gloskey,
Stephen Morrissey (New Milford, CT/Trinity-Pawling School),
Christopher Callejo (West Babylon, NY/Patchouge-Medford) and
Curtis Geiger (Allentown, PA/Emmaus) earned a decisive win by nearly five seconds, crossing the finish line in 1:30.75.
Jeff Walter (Buffalo, NY/St. Francis) was a decisive winner in the 400-meter dash, nearly a second and a half ahead of the field in a time of 52.70 seconds.
Jimmy Petrocchi (Dracut, MA/Dracut) was fifth.
Chase Schuster (New Milford, CT/New Milford ) earned a strong second place finish in the 200-meter dash, finishing in 23.42 seconds, while Walter was right behind in third.
Derek Swarthout (Macedon, NY/Penfield) and
Zach Thesier (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) led a 1-2 finish in the 800-meters. Swarthout crossed the finish line just 16 one-hundredths of a second ahead of his teammate in a time of 2:00.52.
Kaleb Fisher (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) won the 1,000-meters in 2:44.93, while teammate
Jake Barker (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) was two seconds back in third place.
RIT featured the top four finishers in the 3,000-meters.
Dan Jones (Lockport, NY/Lockport) was the race winner by 11 seconds in a time of 9:04.51.
Kyle Higby (Mexico, NY/Mexico),
Owen Brewer (Montrose, PA/Montrose Area) and
Tim Sunnerberg (Burlington, MA/Burlington) completed the top-four sweep.
In the pole vault,
Jack Smith (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder),
Nick John (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca),
Thomas James (/) and Alberto Lafuente swept the top four spots. Smith would clear 4.70 meters, while John surpassed 4.55 meters and James and Lafuente both vaulted 4.40 meters. Smith's vault is tied for the 16th best in Division III this season.
First-year
Matthew Funicelli () emerged victorious in the shot put with a throw of 14.07 meters.
Mickey Evans (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North) was fifth (12.58 meters).
Zach Darling (Rome, PA/Northeast Bradford) and
Ethan Ettienne (Lanham, MD/Model Secondary School for the Deaf) led a strong charge in the weight throw. Darling finished third with a toss of 15.55 meters, while Ettienne was right behind at 15.53 meters.
Devante Marshall (Gloversville, NY/Mayfield),
Stephen Morrissey (New Milford, CT/Trinity-Pawling School) and
Dustin Van Kirk (Canton, CT/Canton) led a strong charge in the triple jump. Marshall finished second with a leap of 13.35 meters, while Morrissey placed third (12.79 meters) and Van Kirk (12.50 meters) placed fourth. Giuliano was a strong second place finisher in the long jump with a leap of 6.83 meters.
RIT is back in action next week with a pair of meets. On Thursday, Feb. 7, RIT will compete at the Brockport Thursday night meet and send a handful of athletes to the David Hemery Invitational at Boston University on Feb. 8-9.
