ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT (6-1-2, 3-0-2 Atlantic Hockey) men's hockey team tied Niagara University (0-6-1, 0-2-1 Atlantic Hockey) 2-2 in Atlantic Hockey action from the Gene Polisseni Center Friday evening. The Purple Eagles earned the extra point with a goal in the 3-on-3 overtime.

Niagara's Eric Cooley scored with 39 seconds remaining in the 3-on-3 to give the Purple Eagles the point.

Shots were 26-21 in favor of RIT. The Tigers failed to score on four power play chances, while the Purple Eagles went 1-for-5 with the man advantage. RIT took five penalties for 10 minutes, while Niagara took four penalties for eight minutes.

Will Calverley (Scarborough, Ontario/Chilliwack Chiefs) and Jake Hamacher (Corona, CA/Dubuque Fighting Saints) each scored for RIT, while Dan Willett (Bayville, NY/Bloomington Thunder), Nick Bruce (Fall River, Nova Scotia/Johnstown Tomahawks), Alden Dupuis (Edmonton, Alberta/Bonnyville Pontiacs) and Shawn Cameron (Sherbrooke, Quebec/Cumberland Grads) each had an assist. Logan Drackett (Calgary, Alberta/Calgary Canucks) made 19 saves in net for the Tigers.

Cooley and Ludwig Stenlund scored for Niagara. Noah Dalmas, Ryan Naumovski, Luke Edgerton and Jordan Wishman each had assists. Chad Veltri made 24 saves in net for the Purple Eagles.

Niagara took a 1-0 lead on a power play goal from Stenlund at 4:49 of the first period. The Purple Eagles worked the puck around the perimeter, eventually winding its way back to Stenlund. He worked himself free and fired a wrist shot through traffic that beat Drackett on his blocker side.

Willett had a chance with 8:07 to play in the opening period. The Tigers pressured Niagara inside its own zone. Willett had a shot that Veltri saved with his paddle. The rebound found its way back to Willett at the point, and he fired a one-timer that clanged off the near post and away.

Calverley had a shot on goal with 5:50 to play in the opening period, and Bruce fired a shot on target with 1:06 to play in the period that Veltri steered aside to keep it 1-0 Niagara after 20 minutes.

RIT tied the score at 11:19 of the second period on Calverley's fourth goal of the season. He and Willett broke into the Niagara zone. Willett fed Calverley with a pass, and he one-timed his shot past Veltri.

The Tigers took a 2-1 lead early in the third period on Hamacher's goal at 5:36. Dupuis miss-hit his shot from between the face-off circles, but the rebound came to Hamacher and he skated free and scored past Veltri.

Niagara answered back on Cooley's goal at 7:36. He took a pass from Luke Edgerton and scored on a spinning back-handed shot from in front, to tie the score at 2-2.

Late in the third period, Cameron had two great chances for RIT. He had a shot from in between the face-off dots that Veltri was able to get a pad to. The puck rattled around the Purple Eagles net, eventually finding Cameron whose second shot whistled just wide.

RIT had the lone shot on net in the first overtime, and it appeared the game was headed for a shootout, but Cooley gave the Purple Eagles the extra point with his goal with 39 seconds to play in the 3x3.

These same two teams will play on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. at Dwyer Arena in Lewiston, N.Y.
