Men's hockey wins 4-1 at Niagara Saturday night

LEWISTON, NY -- The RIT (7-1-2, 4-0-2 Atlantic Hockey) men's hockey team beat Niagara University (0-7-1, 0-3-1 Atlantic Hockey) 4-1 in Atlantic Hockey action from Dwyer Arena Saturday evening. Trailing 1-0 after the first period, the Tigers outscored the Purple Eagles 4-0 in the second and third periods.

Will Calverley (Scarborough, Ontario/Chilliwack Chiefs), Jake Joffe (Toronto, Ontario/Toronto Jr. Canadiens), Nick Bruce (Fall River, Nova Scotia/Johnstown Tomahawks) and Caleb Moretz (Fairbanks, AK/Flin Flon Bombers) each scored for RIT. Bruce finished with a goal and an assist and Elijah Gonsalves (Scarborough, Ontario/Wellington Dukes) had two assists. Logan Drackett (Calgary, Alberta/Calgary Canucks) picked up the win in net for the Tigers, making 16 saves. Ben Sokay scored for Niagara, and Chad Veltri took the loss for the Purple Eagles, making 26 saves.

Sokay gave Niagara an early lead, scoring 36 seconds into the game off an assist from Dylan Mills and Justin Kendall.

RIT tied the game late in the second period on Joffe's goal at 15:317 with the assists going to Dan Willett (Bayville, NY/Bloomington Thunder) and Jake Hamacher (Corona, CA/Dubuque Fighting Saints). Bruce gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead on his goal at 18:38 of the second from Gonsalves.

RIT maintained its one-goal advantage into the third period. Moretz added an empty-net goal at 16:43 and Calverley tallied a second empty-net goal at 19:30 to make it a 4-1 final.

Shots were 30-17 in favor of RIT. The Tigers went 0-for-2 on the power play, while Niagara went 0-for-3 with the man advantage. Niagara took seven penalties for 14 minutes, while RIT took six penalties for 12 minutes.

RIT returns to action on Friday, Nov. 15, when the Tigers host Atlantic Hockey rival Sacred Heart University at 7:05 p.m. from the Gene Polisseni Center.
