ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (2-3) women's basketball team defeated No. 15 St. John Fisher College (4-1) 61-53 on night two of the 2019 Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout from Clark Gym Saturday evening.
Alyssa Juergens (Rochester, NY/Hilton) was named to the All-Tournament Team, while Stanley was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
RIT shot 38.6 percent from the floor on 22-of-57 shooting. The Tigers made 2-of-15 from beyond the arc, and made 15-of-20 from the foul line. Stanley led RIT with 20 points on 7-of-16 shooting. Juergens finished with 14 points and nine rebounds, while
Sabrina Wolfe (Troy, NY/Troy) finished with 13 points.
Leah Koonmen led St. John Fisher with 12 points. Julia Mertsock finished with 10 points for the Cardinals who shot 31.3 percent from the floor.
Fisher led 23-14 after the first quarter, but the Tigers outscored the Cardinals 19-2 in the second quarter to lead 33-27 at halftime. Wolfe ballooned the Tigers lead to 35-27 early in the third quarter with a pair of free throws to open the quarter. Ella Eckert cut the RIT lead back to four points on her free throw with 2:33 to play in the quarter, and a Stanley jumper with 29 seconds to play increased the RIT lead to 45-37.
Koonmen ended the third quarter with a three pointer, and the Cardinals cut the RIT lead to 45-44 on an Eckert layup with 9:15 to play in the fourth quarter. RIT responded with a 5-0 spurt, taking a 50-44 lead on a
Kaleesha Joseph (Somerville, MA/Prospect Hill Academy Charter) bucket with 7:03 to play in regulation. Mertsock cut the RIT lead back to 50-49 on her layup with 3:58 to play, and tied it on her free throw to convert the old fashioned three-point play.
RIT responded with a 7-0 run, taking a 57-50 lead on a pair of Stanley free throws with 1:02 remaining. The Cardinals got to within four points in the closing seconds, but the Tigers made clutch free throws down the stretch for the win.
RIT returns to action on Friday, Dec. 6, when the Tigers begin play in the Liberty League at Vassar College at 5:30 p.m.
