COLORADO SPRINGS, NY – For the first time in Division I, the RIT (5-1-0, 2-0-0 Atlantic Hockey) men's hockey team earned the sweep at Air Force (0-6-0, 0-2-0 Atlantic Hockey) with a 1-0 win over the Falcons Friday evening from the Cadet Ice Arena. Junior goaltender
Logan Drackett (Calgary, Alberta/Calgary Canucks) earned his second shut-out in three games, making 36 saves for the Tigers.
"Great goaltending again tonight, but it was a gutty effort all around," said RIT head coach
Wayne Wilson. "Killing off the five-minute major was huge for us, and to come away with four huge road points will help pay dividends down the road."
Shots were 36-11 in favor of Air Force. The Tigers went 0-for-5 with the man advantage, but held the Falcons to scoreless on all seven of their power plays. RIT took eight penalties for 24 minutes, while Air Force had six penalties for 23 minutes.
Jake Hamacher (Corona, CA/Dubuque Fighting Saints) scored the game-winner for the Tigers at 14:19 of the second period off an assist from
Caleb Moretz (Fairbanks, AK/Flin Flon Bombers). Drackett earns his fifth win of the season, lowering his goals against average to 1.17, while his save percentage improves to .966.
After a scoreless first period, RIT spent most of the second period killing penalties, including a five-minute major early in the period. Drackett stopped all 12 shots he faced in the period, including three straight stops in quick succession with 8:52 remaining on a rush by the Falcons.
The Tigers took the lead on Hamacher's first goal of the season. Moretz intercepted a pass inside the RIT zone and broke 2-on-1 with Hamacher into the Air Force zone. Moretz fed Hamacher with a sweet pass that Hamacher buried to give the Tigers the lead.
RIT did a good job defensively in the third period, particularly late in the period when Air Force pulled Larocque. The Falcons played with the 6-on-5 advantage the final 2:09 of regulation.
The Tigers killed off valuable seconds tying up Air Force along the boards.
Shawn Cameron (Sherbrooke, Quebec/Cumberland Grads) won a key defensive-zone face-off with 8.2 seconds to play in regulation, winning the draw to the near-boards allowing the Tigers to kill off the final seconds.
With the win, RIT finishes the month of October 5-1, the best record in the month since joining Division I in 2005.
RIT returns to action on Friday, Nov. 1 when the Tigers welcome Holy Cross to the Gene Polisseni Center. Face-off from the GPC is 7:05 p.m.
