Women's volleyball loses in three set to Liberty League rival Ithaca College

Tigers has 10-match winning streak snapped

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT (15-9, 3-2 Liberty League) women's volleyball team had its 10-match winning streak snapped with a 3-0 loss to Liberty League rival Ithaca College (15-7, 5-0 Liberty League) from Clark Gym on Wednesday evening.

RIT had 39 kills, hitting .191 for the match, while Ithaca had 51 kills and hit .252. Katie Hobler (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) and Kelly Waters (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) led RIT with 11 kills apiece. Brianna Ellis (Wayne, PA/Radnor) finished with 31 assists, while Maria Simonetti (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) led the Tigers with 12 digs.

"We had good starts to each set," said RIT head coach Jim Lodes. "Ithaca does a great job of staying in the fight. They force you to compete and execute at a high level. We had stretches that we seemed to handle that pressure. Unfortunately we also had a stretch or two in each set where we let them run off some points. I'm sure we will learn from this and be ready for the weekend."

Reagan Stone paced Ithaca with 17 kills, while Sarah Jennison added 10 kills. Caitlyn Floyd handed out 42 assists and Jordyn Lyn Hayashi led the Bombers with 16 digs.

RIT jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the first set, led by four kills from Waters. Ithaca ran off four straight points, cutting the Tigers lead to 7-6 on a Jennison kill, and tied the set at 8-8 on Jennison's fourth kill of the set.

Stone gave the Bombers a 10-9 lead, and a Delaney Runyon service ace extended the Bombers lead 11-9. An Alison Lipton kill extended the Ithaca lead to 13-10. RIT ran off two straight points, cutting the Ithaca lead to 14-13 on a Hobler kill. Waters' fifth kill of the set tied the score at 14-14.

Ithaca ran off four straight points, taking a 20-16 lead on a Pitts kill. The Tigers pilled to within two points at 22-20 on a Higgins kill, but the Bombers scored three straight points to win the first set 25-20.

RIT took a 5-1 lead in the second set on a Higgins kill. Ithaca cut the lead to 6-5 on a RIT attack error, but a Hobler kill extended the Tigers lead to 8-6. A Stone kill and two RIT attack errors gave the Bombers a 9-8 lead.

Hobler tied the set at 10-10, and Higgins gave the Tigers an 11-9 lead on her kill off a miss-played pass attempt by Ithaca. The Bombers ran off three straight points, taking a 12-11 lead on a RIT attack error, extending their lead to 16-12 on a Stone kill. The Bombers would go on to win the set 25-18.

The Tigers tied the score at 9-9 in the third set on kills from Waters and Hobler, and extended their lead to 11-9 via an attack error by the Bombers. Waters made it five straight points for RIT with her kill off an assist from Ellis to give RIT a 12-9 lead.

Ithaca ran off four straight points, tying the score at 14-14 on a Stone kill. A pair of RIT attack errors gave the Bombers a 16-14 lead. Shelby Doheny (Moreau, NY/South Glens Falls) broke the Bombers run, cutting the Ithaca lead to 17-15 with her kill on an assist from Ellis. Joelle Marston (Roxbury, NJ/Roxbury) cut the Ithaca lead to 20-18, and Waters made it 21-19 with her ninth kill of the match.

A pair of Ithaca attack errors tied the score at 21-21. A big block by Hobler and Doheny gave RIT a 24-23 lead late in the third set. Waters had three straight kills to keep the Tigers in the set. Kills from Pitts and Peoples gave Ithaca a 25-24 lead, but a Hobler kill tied the score at 25-25.

A Hobler service ace gave RIT a 27-26 lead, but a kill from Camryn O'Leary, an attack error by RIT and a Stone kill gave Ithaca the 29-27 win.

RIT returns to action on Friday, Oct. 24, against Liberty League rival St. Lawrence University. The match gets underway at 4 p.m. from Canton, N.Y.
