Women's volleyball wins ninth straight with 3-1 win over Medaille Saturday morning

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT (15-8) women's volleyball team won its ninth straight match with a 3-1 win over Medaille College (3-20) Saturday morning as part of RIT's Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend.

The Tigers hit .241 for the match. Taylor Higgins (Peru, NY/Peru) led RIT with 17 kills and 13 digs, hitting .353 for the match. Katie Hobler (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) tallied 13 kills, while Kelly Waters (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) chipped in nine kills and had two solo blocks. Brianna Ellis (Wayne, PA/Radnor) handed out 33 assists, while senior Maria Simonetti (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) had 16 digs.

"We had great rhythm early and late in the match," siad RIT head coach Jim Lodes. "With the emotions of our Dig Pink event and Brick City weekend, I thought we handled all the potential outside distractions pretty well. Overall, this was a good team experience."

Lindsay Howell and Kaleigh Carroll lead Medaille with six kills each, while Halle Bogas added five kills. Savannah Berry and Sierra Wells each had 11 assists for the Mavericks. Gina Appenheimer had 18 digs.

RIT jumped out to an early lead in set, taking a 7-0 lead on a service ace from Kiana Walker (Lloydminster, Alberta/Lloydminster Comprehensive). Higgins increased the Tigers lead to 9-1 with her kill as the Tigers cruised to a 25-12 win. Higgins led the Tigers with five kills, while Hobler added five kills.

Medaille came back in the second set, jumping out to a 4-1 lead on a service ace from Appenheimer. The Mavericks took a 14-6 lead on a kill by Wells, and increased their lead to 17-8 on a  Bogas kill, going on to win the second set 25-13.

RIT trailed 21-18 late in the third set, but rattled off three straight point, tying the score at 21-21 on kill from Higgins. Medaille answered back with two straight points, taking a 23-21 lead on a Carrol service ace. RIT came back with three straight points, including two straight Joelle Marston (Roxbury, NJ/Roxbury) kills to give RIT a 24-23 lead. An attack error by the Mavericks gave RIT a 25-24 lead and a Brianna Ellis (Wayne, PA/Radnor) kill gave RIT the 26-24 win in set three.

RIT dominated the fourth set, winning 25-11.

RIT returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 23, against Liberty League rival Ithaca College. The match gets underway from Clark Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
