Women's volleyball wins seventh straight with a 3-set win at Vassar College

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY -- The RIT (13-8, 3-1 Liberty League) women's volleyball team won its seventh straight match with a 3-0 win at Vassar College Saturday afternoon.

Senior Kelly Waters (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) led the Tigers offensively, tallying 16 kills. Katie Hobler (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) tallied 13 kills and added 13 digs, while Brianna Ellis (Wayne, PA/Radnor) finished with 43 assists. Maria Simonetti (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) led RIT with 15 digs, and Kiana Walker (Lloydminster, Alberta/Lloydminster Comprehensive) chipped in 11 digs.

In a a wild opening set, Vassar opened up a 5-1 lead. A pair of kills from junior outside hitter Joelle Marston (Roxbury, NJ/Roxbury) helped to pull RIT to within two (7-5). Later in the set, the Tigers tied the score at 11-11 on back-to-back kills from Waters.

Vassar led 23-20, but the Tigers answered back with a kill from Hobler and errors from the Brewers, tying the set at 23-23. It was a back-and-forth affair from that point on, as the two teams tied six times. Locked at 29-29 following a kill from Marston, RIT took advantage of a Vassar error and a kill from Taylor Higgins (Peru, NY/Peru) to take the set 31-29.

RIT controlled the play in the second and third sets, winning 25-13 and 25-15.

"We played a really disciplined match from the middle of the first set to the end," said RIT head coach Jim Lodes. "Vassar was aggressive, and we settled in to play some great defense and also win several scramble rallies. It was another good team effort."

RIT returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 16, at cross-town rival University of Rochester at 6 p.m.
