Fast start lifts women's basketball to convincing win over Rensselaer

Tigers open game on 13-0 and 24-2 runs

ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (10-6, 5-4 Liberty League) women's basketball team opened the game with runs of 13-0 and 24-2 en route to a 70-37 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (8-8, 3-6 Liberty League) in Liberty League action from Clark Gymnasium Friday evening.

RIT scored the first 13 points in tonight's contest and led 22-2 after the first quarter. RIT held the Engineers to just two points over the first 13 minutes of the game and allowed just 13 first-half points.

First-year Alyssa Juergens (Rochester, NY/Hilton) tallied 12 of her career-high 21 points in the first quarter to pace the Tigers, who shot 62.5 percent from the floor over the opening 10 minutes. Juergens tallied 21 points on 10-of-17 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds. Tara Lynch (Green Township, NJ/Newton) finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Brooke Stanley (Minnetonka, MN/Benilde-St. Margaret's) chipped in 12 points and Cori Okada (Fullerton, CA/Troy) added 10 for the Tigers, who shot 41.8 percent from the floor.

Ines Ortea led RPI with 11 points and eight rebounds. Rensselaer shot 27.3 percent from the floor on 12-of-44 shooting. The Engineers committed 26 turnovers, while RIT finished with 14 steals.

RIT led 33-13 at halftime and outscored the Engineers 18-14 in the third quarter, and 19-11 in the fourth quarter for the 33-point win.

The Tigers return to action on Saturday, Jan. 26 against William Smith College. Tip-off from Clark Gym is 2 p.m. The Tigers will raise a banner commemorating their berth in the Sweet 16 in last year's NCAA Division III Tournament.
