SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – The No. 25 RIT women's basketball team (8-4, 3-3 Liberty League) tried to rally from a double-digit second half, but came up just short, falling to host Skidmore College (4-9, 3-3 Liberty League), 59-56 from the Williamson Sports Center Friday evening.
RIT scored the first 10 points of the game and led 13-12 after the opening quarter before Skidmore scored the final nine points of the second quarter as part of a 33-10 run spanning the final 15:54 of the opening half to hold a 33-20 edge at halftime. RIT would chip away at the Skidmore lead in the second half, out-scoring the Thoroughbreds 16-10 in the third quarter and getting as close as two points down late in regulation, but could not pull out the win.
Sabrina Wolfe (Troy, NY/Troy) led all scorers with 21 points for the Tigers, draining four 3-pointers to go along with four boards.
Brooke Stanley (Minnetonka, MN/Benilde-St. Margaret's) added 20 points and four steals, as the duo combined for 41 of RIT's 56 points.
Tara Lynch (Green Township, NJ/Newton) and
Alyssa Juergens (Rochester, NY/Hilton) had nine boards apiece for RIT, while
Cori Okada (Fullerton, CA/Troy) had seven boards and five assists.
Kate McCarney led Skidmore with 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor. She hit all four of Skidmore's 3-point field goals on the evening. Taylor Ong recorded a double-double with a game-high 17 rebounds to go along with 16 points.
RIT shot 30.8 percent from the floor on 20-of-65 shooting. RIT was 5-for-22 from 3-point range and struggled from the foul line, shooting 47.8 percent (11-of-23), including 10-of-21 in the second half, as they were trying to rally. The Tigers turned the ball over just nine nine times to 14 from Skidmore.
Skidmore shot 37.7 percent from the floor and were 4-of-25 from 3-point range. The Thoroughbreds won the battle of the boards, 47-42.
Skidmore leads the all-time series between the two schools, 9-7. RIT will host Skidmore from Clark Gym on Feb. 9.
RIT will look to snap its three-game losing streak Saturday afternoon at Liberty League co-leader Vassar College. Opening tip-off will be at 2 p.m.
