ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (10-11, 8-6 Liberty League) men's basketball team rallied from a second half deficit to defeat visiting Ithaca College (12-9, 7-7 Liberty League) 68-66 Tuesday evening from Clark Gymnasium.
Robert Aguilera (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) made two free throws with 27 seconds to play in regulation to seal the win for the Tigers, who move into sole possession of third place in the league standings.
RIT shot 37.5 percent from the floor on 24-of-64 shooting. The Tigers went 5-of-18 from beyond the arc, and went 15-of-22 from the foul line. Aguilera led the Tigers with 22 points and 15 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season.
Anthony Lewis (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) tallied 16 points, while
Troy Pierre-Louis (Providence, RI/Berkshire School) chipped in 14 points.
Marcell Davis (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph's Institute) pulled down nine boards for the Tigers, who held a 56-44 edge on the glass.
Carroll Rich led Ithaca with 16 points, while Miles Herman tallied 10 points. Marc Chasin tallied eight points, 11 rebounds and had four assists for the Bombers, who shot 33.8 percent from the floor.
RIT trailed by as many as nine points in the first half, but rallied late to trail 32-29 at the break. Lewis laid the ball in for RIT with 43 seconds to play in the half to cut the Ithaca lead to three points. Both teams shot 31 percent from the field over the opening 20 minutes.
Ithaca would maintain its lead throughout the second half, upping its advantage to nine points, 60-51 on a free throw by Matt Flodd with 7:06 left. RIT would respond with a 9-2 run, as Pierre-Louis drained a 3-pointer with 4:54 to play cut the Ithaca lead to 62-60. Lewis tied the game at 64-64 with his 3-pointer with 3:10 to play.
Aguilera gave RIT its first lead of the second half with his layup with 2:35 to play. Chasin answered with a driving layup for the Bombers with 44 seconds remaining, tying the score at 66-66.
On RIT's next trip down the floor, Aguilera was fouled. He calmly stepped up and drained two free throws with 27 seconds to play to give the Tigers a 68-66 lead. Ithaca had a chance at the buzzer, but Lewis blocked a 3-point attempt by Sebastian Alderete with time expiring to preserve the win.
RIT returns to action on Friday, Feb. 9 when the Tigers face Vassar College at 8 p.m. in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
