POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — The RIT (11-11, 9-6 Liberty League) men's basketball team went on the road Friday and earned a big 63-54 win over host Vassar College (7-15, 6-9 Liberty League) to remain in third place in the Liberty League standings.
RIT shot 38.5 percent from the floor on 25-of-65 shooting. The Tigers made 7-of-21 from beyond the arc, and made 6-of-12 from the foul line.
Robert Aguilera (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) led the Tigers with 13 points and 12 rebounds for his third consecutive double-double and seventh of the season.
Troy Pierre-Louis (Providence, RI/Berkshire School) finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
Marcell Davis (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph's Institute) and
Anthony Lewis (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) each tallied nine points.
Paul Grinde led Vassar with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Jesse Browne tallied 11 points and had four assists, while Alex Seff chipped in 10 points for the Brewers, who shot 37.5 percent from the floor.
RIT trailed by as many as nine points in the first half, and fell behind 24-16 with 9:24 to play in the first half on a Grinde layup.
Matt Anderson (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) cut the Vassar lead to 26-25 with 5:20 to play in the half on his layup off an assist from Pierre-Louis.
Browne gave the Brewers a 34-29 lead with 1:25 to play in the half on his 3-pointer. Davis scored five straight points for RIT, including a bucket with 1:03 remaining to tie the game at 34-34. Davis led RIT with nine points as RIT shot 43.8 percent from the floor in the first half.
Vassar took an early five-point lead on Browne's 3-pointer 21 seconds into the second half.
Will Atkinson (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius) gave RIT a brief one-point lead on his 3-pointer moments later.
Later in the half, Browne drained a jumper to give Vassar a 49-45 lead. That would be the Brewers final lead of the game. Anderson cut the Vassar lead to 49-48 with his 3-pointer off an assist from Pierre-Louis with 9:10 to play.
Wyatt Smith (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) gave the Tigers the lead for good with eight minutes to play, and Pierre-Louis extended the Tigers lead to 59-52 on his jumper with 2:58 to play, capping off a 14-3 run.
Lewis scored the back-breaker with a 3-pointer with 46 seconds to play that extended the RIT lead to 62-54. The Tigers have now won three straight games. RIT returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 10 when the Tigers face Skidmore College at 4 p.m. in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
